We leave for Bonaire in less than a month & are
really getting pumped! Has anyone tried a night or
cave snorkel? How were they & what company would
you recommend? Has anyone had any experience with
ABC charters? Can Jeff Davis memorial & Barcadera
be reached by shore, or boat only? Are places like
Cliff, La Manchaca, Windsock worth snorkelling or
are they gone? And what areas of Klein Bonaire are
recommended? Any places in the national park or
are they devastated? Thanks one

I can answer only one of your questions: night snorkel is very good. The fish you see are different, and there is a crowd of tiny creatures showing in your light beam. If you know where to look, you can see moray eels, shrimp, lobster and others at places you never saw them during the day. We did a night guided snorkel at the Sand Dollar, and that is very good: the guide points out things you would probably miss.

Re: Windsock snorkeling. We found in Feb/April that most of the coral we saw there was destroyed, but still a wealth of fish life. The beach area was even nicer because they'd done a lot of clean-up work. We had a couple of great snorkels there, and watched the sunset too.

I would recommend snorkling with the "Woodwind" especially if you want to snorkle on Klein Bonaire. Almost any site that is not on Klein is accessible from the shore (depending on how hard you want to work). Renee (on Woodwind) also does guided snorkling and night snorkling. Almost everyone who has gone out with her give very high recommendations: check out some postings and you will see.

A few of your questions stayed unanswered. I (Herma's husband Henk Roozendaal) dived Jeff Davis Memorial from the shore. A bit of climbing, but no problem. There is a ladder to the sea at Barcadera. You can reach the place by walking over unbuilded area at Sabadeco Court. Easier access to the sea do you have from the Sabadeco dock down there. You can make two beautiful dives from the dock. 1 to the South, direction Andrea II, 2 to the North, direction Barcadera.

I recently(two weeks ago)had a friend return from a Bonaire dive trip who had never been there before. He said that he was told that the reefs had experienced a lot of damage this last winter, especially the inner reefs that were close to shore. Has anyone found this to be true? He also said that Pink Beach was washed away. Is this true? I am not sure if it is true or if some dive master was "pulling his leg". Any info would be greatly appreciated.

What was told to your friend is essentially true, although it may not have seemed that bad to someone who never experienced the reefs "pre- Hurricaine Lenny". We were in Bonaire for our annual visit in late January---several weeks after Lenny---and found that areas that had been directly exposed to the wave action (such as Jerry's Jam on the outside of Klein Bonaire) were badly damagwd. Many other protected areas, such as the inner coast of Klein and nothern dive sites, had little or no damage. As for Pink Beach, it was badly eroded; but I understand that since our stay there has been much done to rebuild it.
In conclusion, it is still wonderful diving.
