Peter,

I thought this was a particularly good thread on digital vs. film. Lots of different viewpoints expressed and several very good links to websites with loads of information on digital, film and underwater housings.

I think there are benefits too both, you’ll get the best shots using the Nikonos, but they are not as easy to use, and that’s a big issue when underwater and you’ve got lot’s going on. The biggest drawback to digital I think is the shutter button speed, that is the amount of time elapsed from when you push the button to when the picture is actually taken. I’ve yet to see a digital camera that can approach the speed of a film camera. When you are trying to get that shot of a quick or shy fish, this will drive you crazy. Of course you can’t beat the instant gratification of digital results and the ability to try again if you’re not pleased with your first attempt. Also after having Kodak loose 3 roll of slides from my November trip to Bonaire (thank goodness that’s only part of what I took) digital just became a much more reasonable solution for me.

It really comes down to personal preference at this point. In a few more years (5+) digital cameras will probably have advanced so much that film will slowly go away except for the few diehards who still own turntables too, and people who appreciate the nuances of film and the actual process (like myself).

My suggestion to you is rent a Nikonos on your next trip (easy to do if your going to Bonaire or many other places) and see if you’re happy with the results. Sure it will be a few bucks down the tubes, but it may just help sway you one way or the other. I’m not aware of too many places renting housed digital cameras (particularly Sony), but there might be someone who will rent you one and you could compare.

the slow shutter speed on these digitals is gonna be a challenge for sure...

i just missed some because of the speed...

angel

but for the first time out i'm very happy...go digital if you don't already have the other...

I think the Nikonos V is a great camera. Have been using it for ten years. I don't think it is hard to use and the results can be great
