We will be in Bonaire Dec 4 to 11, 2002. We have BCD's that require soft weights. According to my travel agent the dive shops rent all kinds of equipment, in fact the shore diving package that we bought specifies that weights and tanks are provided.
Now I am reading that Soft weights are no longer approved on Bonaire because of an environmenal problem Seems that the lead shot leaks out and damages the coral. What is the answer to my dilemma. Do I bring my own soft weights, which are new type which do not leak the lead shot out.
Might exceed my airline weight limit.
Do I try to use a weight belt with my Tusa imprex bcs which is made for integrated weights. I have never used a weight belt, and don't even know how to dive with one.
Or, do the dive shops provide soft weights.

All the dive shops I'm familiar with on Bonaire use hard weights. Not sure about any environmental restrictions against soft weights. Hard weights are just cheaper and less likely to walk.

Thanks Jake: I was diving in the Keys a couple of years ago, and the dive shop only had hard weights, but they would not fit in my Tusa Imprex Pro BCD, and also not in my wife's Dacor extreme elle.
At Vortex springs dive shop, there were some hard weights that would fit, but were difficult to install. I guess if the photo dive tours shop can't provide soft weights, I will have to bring my own. Of course, that might mean that I can't bring anything more that is heavy. LIKE KRISPY KREME DOUGHNUTS.

BTW. I bought a web cam membership. Good web site

Elwin, have a great trip! Maybe you can get some of the alpacas to carry the weights down for you? LOL. Maybe not a good idea, tho, with the goats and donkeys running around on the island...the alpacas look so sweet and innocent. Carole

Bon Bini has both soft and hard weights.

Quite a problem, there's got to be a way not to have to carry that lead. My two solutions you've already tried. Put hard weights in the pockets and a weight belt (this one you could reconsider if you get desperate).

I also wanted to mention, I've spent some time up your way. When I attended Ga Tech, I use go camping around Helen. Beautiful area, the upper Hooch was a blast to canoe.
