On Saturday the 16th of April BonPhoto organized its first freediving event.
Many gathered on the beach at Playa Frans,
where people could learn about freediving during a presentation
that was given by an Apnea Academy instructor.

After all questions were answered most people went into the water
to apply newly acquired knowledge and techniques.
There was free snorkel gear to use for those that did not have their own
and some chose to use one of the kayaks made available.

As many people were snorkeling and freediving
we had the great opportunity to search for lionfish.
Since many of the invasive species are found in relatively shallow waters,
most were easily spotted from the surface and after being located,
caught by trained lionfish hunters.

In between dives, people enjoyed the beach of Playa Frans
and snacks from the BBQ that was lit around noon.

Late afternoon, between 4pm and 6pm proved to be a happy hour
were 40 lionfish were caught by only two hunters
thanks to the help of all the freediving spotters that were constantly looking for lionfish.

After all the diving we were able to remove 59 lionfish from the reef among 4 hunters.
About half of the fish were cleaned on site and prepared on the BBQ
to be enjoyed by all participants and local fishermen of Playa Frans.
The other half was brought to a local restaurant to expose more people to the great meat that lionfish offers.

Thanks to all of you that joined for making this day such a success and
hope to see all of you on our next event which will be announced soon.
