Hi Michael:
Gloves can only be worn while diving on the wreck called the Hilma Hooker.
I will also be staying at the Plaza for the second time in September. It is only a 1 and 1/2 mile walk or so into 'downtown' Kralendijk for tons of great restaurants.
At the Plaza there are 3 good resturants to choose from.
Check out their site if you haven't yet.

When will you be there?

Michael, I recommend Richards which is just outside of the resort. Also, the Tipsy Seagull. Both waterfront. Compadres at Harbour Village, nice view of the Marina, good food and service. Pop over to Lions Dive Restaurant for lunch if you can, great burgers, view and service.

Michael,
They just don't want you to wear gloves to keep you from touching all that pretty and fragile stuff. You don't need them (unless it's for medical reasons), the water's quite warm.

Gloves can only be worn normally in 3 cases:

1) To use on ascent/descent via mooring lines (because of the inevitable encrustations)

2) To use when diving a wreck (e.g. Hilma Hooker) to avoid cuts from the wreck

3) During a clean-up dive.

No other use of gloves underwater is permitted under Bonaire Marine Park rules.

Doctor's exception is possible for people with poor circulation or for handicapped divers who use gloves with webbing between fingers for propulsion.

I really hope that people respect this rule. We all know on Bonaire it is extremely difficult to enforce. If you've diving with just your buddy, everyone knows no-ones going to see you pull a pair of gloves from your BC after you descend.

Too many times have I seen divers with gloves damage the reef. Even if there isn't large obvious coral, there is absolutely amazing macro sized life that gets damaged everytime you grab a piece of the reef. Please don't touch anything. If you're a newer diver, and don't have your bounency down pat yet, stay a little higher off of the reef.

Somebody once told me that the changes you should be leave behind on the reef is a trail of bubbles. I really like that.

Divers without gloves can damage the reef, too. They use their knives to "poke" at the reef. Perhaps wearing gloves encourages touching. However, using boyancy control and touching nothing but your equipment and your buddy is the best way to respect the underwater world, reefs and residents.

There - now I feel better.

See you soon, Bonaire!

Most definately Becky. I certainly was not trying imply that ONLY divers with gloves do damage. Respect the reef!! :)
