How large would you say this thing is? And at what time of year was this?

If it's the same size as the one we saw on a night dive off Sand Dollar a couple of years ago, it's about the size of a standard soda can (looked like a transparent Coke can with four tentacles).

It's a definite "don't touch!!!" critter...

Do these critters frequent the waters in the summer vs the winter months? Are they attracted to light as in full moons? Would you recommend wearing a cap or hood during a night dive?
Thanks in advance from another newbie arriving next month ;+)

Jake, Lea, and the Cubozoan,

Lea thanks for posting this great photo. This sea wasp is Carybdea alata. Also in the Deloach/Humann Reef Creature book. But this is not the box jelly (Cubozoan) photographed by Vicki Carr off Belnem, which has clearly striped tentacles and a wider bell.

Lea, where and when did you photograph this Carybdea? Also, eagle-eyed Glen asked a good question about the other objects in the background. Sea wasps are really swarming this year. 700 people were sting this week in Daytona Beach area. It was IDed since the today's article. Link below.

Perhaps Vicki will post her photo too. Her video is simply amazing.

Faith is right, they quite toxic.

Thanks,

Bud

Dan,

Sea wasps swarm 6-8 days after a full moon in warm waters around the world. It is a species characteristic. A jelly party if you will. However, it is quite rare to see them near the coastline.

Bonaire's water are amazingly safe, but jellies are present throughout the Caribbean. I have actually seen more sea wasps in the daytime than at night. There is another thread about jellies on BT.

Hawaii Box Jelly Swarming.

This article is another side of Hawaii's biology we don't here about. It is abit alarming, but should make you thankful for Bonaire's wonderful water, give or take a few box jellies.
