While in Bonaire last December one of the staff members at the dive shop urged me to try to find someone who would loan me their tanks during my next stay. He said if someone had tanks and they were off the island and would loan them to me it would save me the rental cost for the tanks. Is this a good idea or not? Have any of you done this before?

Some dive operations have arrangements for tank fillings which are a bit cheaper than tank rentals (you get only the air instead of tank plus air). This only makes sense if you are on Bonaire for quite some time and if you do NOT plan on doing tons of dives. Most dive ops only fill tanks once a day. That means that if you do 4 dives a day you would need at least 4 tanks that you can loan. If you have a buddy that makes 8 tanks. In my personal opinion with tank packages for unlimited air the way they are now (anywhere between 99 and 139 dollars for 6 days unlimited air I think) it does not make sense to go into the trouble of a loaning arrangement unless you are here for a long time.
