Are the jellyfish bad in Bonaire? Do you need a skin? Don't know whether to bring skin or wetsuit?

Mimzyr..Not to confuse you, but the answer to your question depends upon what month of the year you're diving, your individual tolerance to cold, what direction the winds are from, what cycle the moon is & what time of day or night it is.

A simple answer is the jelly fish are not bad in Bonaire. Clear as mud?

Personally I don't dive with less than a 3mm full length wet suit anywhere at any temp. Two reasons. First, I do get cold even on Bonaire after a few dives a day and at night. Secondly I have been stung by a jellyfish and it is not fun. And fire coral has caught me more than once. For those reasons something full length is my personal practice.

mimzyr...I bring both. I always wear at least a skin I get cold after a few days of diving.
I got hit by something last year. It stung me across my face! my hood may have helped but it still hurt. Never saw what it was though. Wasp? JF? dunno....

Check archives on relation to full moon and time period following it when it is more likely for jellies to drift in..also be on
the lookout for our own box jelly(BBBJ)-we saw one two yrs ago-rare but there-full suit a good idea IMHO.

saw one of the box jellies on a night dive. They say they are attracted to lights so be careful around lighted piers.

Bonaire's Banded Box Jelly: A Marvelous New Species of Cubozoan

The discussion will be about the research, findings and naming of BBBJ. This box jelly received over 500 suggested names. The 7 finalists are posted on the 2009 Year of Science (June) website. A general discussion about box jellies on Bonaire and jellies worldwide will be part of the discussion. Also, another potential new box jelly has the Smithsonian stumped, it too is from right here on Bonaire. We will show you pics and a specimen too. We are calling it PBBJ.

Also, an invite to participate in the 5th Annual Jellyfish Jamboree and Sting Study will be given. New research about nematocysts, stings, and remedies will be discussed.
