I've read the reports about post-Omar damage to sites. 1000 Steps is one of my favourites. I heard the staghorn coral in the shallows was damaged, but I haven't read any reports lately that mention this site. Has anyone dove this site lately? Is there any staghorn coral left?

Funny story: I recommended Bonaire to a friend of mine, who arrived on Sunday. He usually goes to FL for dive trips. He emailed me today to say that he is never going back to FL for diving, LOL! Bonaire strikes again!

5 days and a wakey!

Natalie - Yep. Bonaire captures another underwater afficionado. You will be there soon. And although Omar did damage from what people post on here it does not diminish the Bonaire experience.

I was just curious to know about the staghorn coral. The little fish would normally stay in between the 'horns' to hide from the bigger fish. It was always a nice place to spend a safety stop.

Natalie, I dove it about three weeks ago, oddly, it was my first time diving that site in ten trips....it's the "1000 steps" that has kept me at bay...lol....i had a gem of a dive buddy who carried my tank down, back up, down again, and back up again....I don't remember any staghorn coral, but that's not saying much. The group I was with liked to swim out to do the drop off then dive. I wasn't that "impressed" with the site, it was ok, but I think there are better with healthier coral. But that is just my objective opinion.

Staghorn coral didn’t make it. Last year it appeared as 1-2 ft high structures in the shallows, now (Jan 2009) it is spread low in a bottom mostly dead, with only few tips still alive. Though it is one of fast growing coral it will take few years to restore appearance. But otherwise 1000 steps looks good, even shallow parts. You will see few broken coral (both hard and soft) but most made it OK. It still has pretty wide and dense forest of soft coral between sandy shallows and drop off. And deeper part is unchanged. Saw octopus during day completely on the open.

Thanks Sergei! Too bad about the staghorn, but nice to hear all the soft coral is still there! :-)

Was just at 1000 steps with my in-laws for an afternoon snorkel, not many fish there, there is still some coral in the shallows, but not much at all. Have to swim out to the reef's edge to see anything.
