If all sites were marked the perimeter road would have to be painted solid yellow!!!!!!

How about all the marked sites require upkeep from the folks at STINAPA. I suspect if you ask them, they'd tell you they have enough work already. :-)

I don't have BSDME handy right now as a reference, but could it be that the unmarked sites are intermediate-advanced dives? Could the belief be that by not marking them, it deters inexpereienced divers from diving there?

As an example, I'm thinking of LaDania, where there is no way out once you jump in except heading down to Karpata.

Mod: Why do my posts keep getting removed?

Mel, for what it's worth, your posts don't appear in the email feed. Usually I get the email of a post even when it's removed. Did you pay your monthly dues to BT?

OK, I'll try again! there was a local Comcast problem (isn't there always?) here, so maybe I went into the ether...

I'm thinking that most divers mostly tend to stay fairly close to the marked sites, so having some areas that are unmarked makes them kind of little Marine Protected Areas, and refuges for any critters that would like a little privacy. Not to mention the coral that can't move...

At least, I hope it works that way.

With the publication of BSDME and all of the information available on the internet, it seems illogical to not gain an understanding of where to and where not to dive/snorkel on the island. After all, the place is just not that big. It is only what, about 11 miles from Karpata to the Willemstoren Lighthouse?

I have dove many of the unmarked (by STINAPA) sites mentioned in BSDME. Many are easy sites so that is not a reason. It would seem that there are too many possible entry points for STINAPA to mark and to maintain all of them. Like I said - just paint the entire road yellow!!!

Marked sites were established by the Bonaire National Marine Park. Unmarked sites are those which have been used by divers looking for different places to go.

Beautiful...the final and correct answer in 2 short sentences. I do have one small thing to add though. Of the official STINAPA dive sites only the shore dive sites are marked. This is why for instance La Dania's Leap is not marked. It is not considered a shore dive site since there is no way to exit.
