Help!

I normally dive a shorty old skool surfing wetsuit from 1992. Luckily, it's black and not teal and pink or something.

Anywho...

I'm thinking of either switching to a 1mm Scubapro steamer (not even sure what "steamer" means) or maybe layering a skinsuit (not sure what "skinsuit" means either) underneath my shorty suit.

In Coz, the shorty is about right for warmth for 2 dives per day, but I'm wondering if 4+ dives per day in Bonaire might make me a little colder than normal.

Plus, the full suit style seems like a good idea for shore diving (when I stumble into the ocean) or to keep jellyfish and other critters from snuggling up to me.

Thoughts?

Doug - Welcome to BT and Bonaire.

FWIW - it sounds like you are on target with the thinking of a full length wet suit for protection and warmth. Even in 80 +/- temps. Particularly for >2 dives per day and the potential for night diving.

Steamer is just a ScubaPro brand name. I think it must refer to warmth but my ScubaPro 3mm Steamer is no different than my Bare 2/3 mm wetsuit.

A skin will not add warmth much but may make putting on a wetsuit easier. Sort of like wearing pantyhose then donning your wetsuit. Some folks like that - men or women actually.

Hi Doug,
Welcome...
I like to wear my dive skin, it protects me from scrapes and jellies..
makes the wetsuit donning a lil easier.
I get chilly after a couple of days diving 4 times per day. I end up wearing a full 3mm.

the first few days I wear my vest with hood, then upgrade. But thats just me. It is chilly in the spring.
Have fun!!

I always bring my 7/5 fullsuit. We usually do 4-5 dives/day.

YMMV

Never 'wrong' to bring any gear! Your choice if you use it, no one else's.

Certainly the hooded vest – hoods are the best investment in warmth versus added buoyancy.

I've been fine just wearing a skinsuit (all in one full length lycra type thing).
