I spoke recently with a friend on Bonaire who is one of the supervisors for the recompresson chamber. When I asked how many divers use the chamber each year, she said about 4. I was amazed at this low figure given the large number of dives on Bonaire each year....(maybe 400,000 to 500,000 dives?), and the large number of relatively new divers (easy place to dive).

Let's not forget that some credit for the low accident rate should probably go to the shop operators (Like Babs at Dive Inn - my shameless endorsement for the day). Most operators I have met so far in Bonaire seem to take a sincere interest in their clients. They give good advice based on the skill level of the divers and keep an eye out for any borderline dangerous diving - in a way that is not an imposition on what we all expect in terms of diving freedom.

The operators surely support safe diving, but the fact is that many many divers like ourselfs buy air and never board a boat. The number using the chamber is amazing with the number of divers that are totally on their own and do their own thing.
