Roger Burnham has a great vid of Omar, and what it looks like now at Sabadeco Pier.

Roger Burnham Omar Video

Thank you for the video presenting the Omar and post-Omar situation on Bonaire. That sort of work is very, very helpful.

Now, I risk the wrath of the BT faithful. A couple of disclosures: I don't know Roger; I believe that he is a good man and, if he has a dog, is assuredly kind to it, children, strangers, and the less fortunate; his videography is first-rate and surpasses anything I might ever hope to accomplish; and, lastly, I realize that he is merely filming the events in the other video logs.

With that said, I was troubled by the Trumpetfish Tango and the Trunkfish Two-step portions of his Bari Reef video. I am much more conservative in my approach to marine life than was presented there - I don't believe in using pointers or any sorts of foreign objects to alter fish behavior (yes, I am aware that merely by being present I am altering fish behavior and that everything I'm wearing and doing is foreign to that environment - the difference is between direct and indirect effects) and I absolutely don't condone touching anything at anytime unless it is trying to harm me, is harming me, or I must touch it to stop harming it.

My point here is that posting videos like the one I'm describing may not be in the best interests of diving in general. It raises questions about what's permissible underwater because it appears to condone this sort of interaction and it feeds the (generally) false perception that divers do all sorts of things to whatever they want. As to the level of responsibility a videographer has in relation to the behaviors of those who have contracted for a video production (in other words, should such a video even be made)...that would be a fun conversation, but not one I'm trying to initiate here.

In sum, I'm grateful for the update; I'm less grateful for the marine life interaction depicted on other shoots.

Peace,

John

I appreciate John's comments and as an instructor also I understand the issues he raises. However, with that said, I do think this video is well done and for the first time I am seeing the effects of Omar on the reef. It is a good documentary and I will share it around to students and other divers as well as non-divers. Kudos to Roger.

John, this has been hashed out several times before and I've stated my views:

Actually, while I am kind to dogs, I'm not very fond of them...much prefer cats.

That was a very sad dive indeed. I recognized the area where the large mountainous star coral stood and just could not believe that it was rubble. I just stared at it trying to put the pieces of the puzzle back together. Then when we got to the pier and found that the groves of elkhorn coral were gone, replaced by sand...just so many of the landmarks gone.....
Thanks for posting the video Roger-though I can't get the images out of my mind, I think it's a good reminder to us all how mother nature redesigns our seas and earth-and we cannot forget our part in that.

Babs, seeing all the elkhorn coral gone, and just rubble was VERY disheartening for sure:-(

I am waiting for final word on picking up newly placed debris from the storm. I have heard from ElseMarie that there will be some organizing going on to do so.

Thanks Roger for the post Omar video. This is the first glimps I have had of the underwater life since the hurricane. Lots of damage to the reef but lots of promise as well. I also watched some of your other videos of Bonaire. Loved them all especially Angel City which was probably my favorite dive while on Bonaire. Thanks for sharing.

Cory, There is many sites where the damage is minimal. Your trip will be fine, just dive a little deeper... Ron

Cory, many sites in the south and the eastern side of Klein, as well as the eastern side of Bon are with little or no apparent damage. Also, as Ron noted, deeper, below 35-40 feet also has minimal damage. Have a great trip and do not worry!

Laser pointer. Non-"invasive." No provocation.

...and your cat will love it for hours.
