He just says to forget about it for the next 10 years. Anyone have anything more specific? Did all the sponges, etc. get washed off the pilings? Is everything gone?

I know from a DM in Bonaire that Town Pier lost everything off the pillars and some large chunks of concrete fell into the ocean and that it is closed indefinately.

Salt pier is being investigated today

Would the town pier affect the cruise liners scheduled to arrive soon??? Hmmmmm. It would be interesting if Omar put the damper on their arrivals this season....hmmmmm. cb

PS I can already hear the reasoning for a "positive" reason some folks want more cruise liners in port...since Omar, they might lose divers and snorkelers and will "need" the ships on Bonaire to make up for the "loss" of revenue from the "lost" divers/snorkelers......I certainly hope NOT! cb

From what I heard yesterday there is a large cruise ship scheduled to come in Monday, 10/27 so ships are not a problem. Just the marine life on the pier themselves make it no longer a spectacular dive. Sad...

Everything on BON is a spectacular dive!! My goodness. It is saddening that there has been damage but the dives, even with the damage, are still more spectacular than most places I have traveled. Now, I realize I am no world traveler, but with only a week at a time to spend, BONAIRE has not and will NOT lose it's appeal. The damage should in NO WAY discourage people from diving Bonaire and people should not be lead to believe that the sites are not still spectacular, they are, they are just different due to things being moved around.

Lenny covered coral badly with sand and silt and according to Bart with Wanna Dive, it recovered very quickly and the dive professionals agree that this is the Mother's way of showing off but the dives are not "ruined"!!

I have many pictures of the difference before and after but in no way did it EVER cross my mind that Bonaire's appeal has been lost or that the dives were not as good.

This has been a real educational experience for me and this "assault" on Bonaire's coral was no where as severe as when Lenny hit.

Go and do ALL the dives. Enjoy the experience of seeing the way Mother cleanses, and if anyone tells you the dives on BON aren't worth it...come talk to me!!!!

Krisp, And if only Bonaire now could get the sewage problem under control so the corals are not "taxed" any further by all the nutrients coming from wastewater and causing microalgae to smother the reefs. Mother Nature we have no control over but the sewage on Bonaire we do have control over, and it would be a shame if Bonaire loses its reefs due to a human problem that can be "managed." If you are concerned about this looming crisis for Bonaire's reefs, please join the SOS Campaign To Save Bonaire's Reefs.
