There was another video of a mother, father and two young daughters vacationing on Bonaire. In one part the mother is diving off of the "Hooker", great example for the children - NOT!!! I CAN NOT BELIEVE WHAT SOME PEOPLE WILL DO!!!

Boom, the wet cave snorkels can be arranged with most dive shops. I've been wanting to do it for awhile, but the trip schedules never matched with dates i was there.

In the Octopus video there is a segment at about 1:15 on where you can see TWO STINAPA Tags.
I wonder if through enhancement the numbers could be made out. There should be records of who this was and perhaps they could be black listed too. GRRRR these videos make me too mad!

Is there really a Bonaire "Black List"? I don't remember anybody checking my name against any list when I arrived at the airport in January.

From what I've heard from way back in the late 90's - yes, there is a black list. I was told by someone who is supposedly on it that one exists. IF nothing else it has kept him from coming back and that's a good thing.

Yes, there is a black list. If you violate marine park rules, your name is put on the list, and you are not allowed back on Bonaire.

If the Marine Park catches you while on island violating the rules, they confiscate your equipment and hold it until you leave island, and then you are put on the list, and can't come back.

I can think of at least three cases I know of. One person posted pics on BT of holding and handling a puffer fish, and bragged about it. Slap, he got nailed!

Mel, are you on the list?

I imagine when you clear customs, they check it when you provide your passport.

No, I'm not on the list. At least I shouldn't be - I was on my best behavior and didn't touch anything! I was just trying to figure out when, during my arrival/departure/getting the STINAPA tag, anyone checked my name against a list. Do they check a list after you're already on the island and then hunt you down and make you leave if you're not supposed to be there?

I think your right, Mel. It sounds a lot like the purple dye in the pool story to me.

And I fell for that one when I was a kid, too! Whatever works, I guess.

Seems to me Bonaire could enact some stiffer penalties than just kicking you out of the country permanently. If you vandalize topside they (should) put you in jail, why is vandalizing the reef any different?

Just goes to show you the smartest creatures on the planet are also the dumbest.

The Portuguese text at the end of the Hilma Hooker "Combat" video says something to the effect "Due to the irresponsibility demonstrated in this video, the names of those involved are being withheld to prevent retaliation." Apparently the culprits knew there would be negative feedback.

They do it all the time on CSI, they get four pixels from a crappy surveillance camera and their software creates a perfect human face right down to the pimples.

I have a program at home that might help, I try it tonight. It is mostly for removing grain from scanned pictures but it might clean this up a bit. I'd still be surprised if it is readable.

I tried Neat Image which has done wonders in the past but not this time. It made it worse.

These photos/videos make me so angry!

Just returned from a beautiful week of diving with my two sons 12 and 15. They knew not to do things like this. They did not touch anything. Hooker was the highlight of the week for them.

Where were the other divers? During orientation I was told to feel free to make other divers aware when they were damaging the reef. If only to tap them on the shoulder and shake my finger and head at them. They make make rude gestures in return, but so what.

My sons saw only one example of poor dive stewardship. On a boat dive to Klein, a very large man with a rebreather was literally laying on the reef. I thought he was dead and was preparing to use my rescue skills. Our DM went up to him and told him to get off the reef. Rebreather man just waved him away and lay his huge body back down on the coral. Topside there was an exchange between the DM and rebreather man who called the DM an idiot and said he was hovering an inch off the coral with his knees in the sand. If he COULD hover, then I am the queen of sheba. I later told the DM he had my support and that he should report the guy. My sons were appalled!

What's up Bonaire Lovers! It's nice to be remembered. Yes, last time I was here was around late September 2007 when I posted the link to my video as my trip report.

I have not been able to do much since I was preparing for a big move and to transfer my business.

My wife and I have relocated from NJ to WA (yes, as in Washington State). Needless to say how that took a big chunk of our time, but it's been worth it.

We plan on returning to Bonaire in 2009 to visit our friends. This year it's going to be impossible. I'll be splashing the life rich waters of Puget Sound in the mean time, and I'll be looking forward to our next visit.

For those of you thinking of the cave trip, get in touch with Hans Voerman. Great guide and great guy! You'll have a blast!
