Hi all,

Do any of you have a rough estimate on the cost for diving per day? Granted, it depends on if you are doing boat dives or shore diving. This would be a mix of the two (with emphasis on shore diving, I think). We have our own snorkels, masks, fins, weight belts & BCs, but we'd need to rent the rest.

I guess my general question is when you're figuring our your vacation budget, how much do you plan that you will be spending daily on diving?

Thank you!

Hi Stephanie,

I usually check the pricelist of the dive operation I dive with (for me it's usualy Photo Tours) and calculate the prices. Most of the time I make 1 or 2 2-tank boatdives per week and have a unlimitted shore dive package. For me that's OK, since I'm used to shore dives. It depends on the person if he or she wants to make shore- or boat dives.

Personally I calculate about 100 to 130 US$ for one week diving.

Martin

Ida - I know you were serious, but your short response made me giggle. How many boat dives do you do compared to shore dives, etc.? Thanks for the info!

Martin - I think we will do the majority of dives from shore with a few boat dives as you have done. I'm getting a couple of books on dive sites (got one today - VERY excited!) and it's helpful to see what really looks good and what I will need to be on a boat to get to. I've read good stuff about Photo Tours and was reading about the pink bus they run -- that's really a great idea. Thanks for the help, Martin!

Stephanie, When buying books, don't forget Jesse Armacoast's book (I believe it's nam is "A guideline to shore diving" or something like that). It's availabel nationwide on Bonaire. Photo tours surely has it.

Martin - oooh, thanks for the heads up on the book. I love diving books and will certainly keep my eye out for it.

I'm sorry for the short response I wasn't sure how many days you were diving. $57.00 - 2 boat dives and unlimited shore diving, tips, tax. Approx. $57.00. We normally go on 7 day vacations and we calculate around $350.00 for the week, first time to Bonaire and it's included in our package, but I had emailed them prior to booking and that's the price they gave me over the internet.

tipping - raises question in my head - how much is considered the norm for tipping on dive boats. I've always gone to Bonaire with a group and our group leader includes the tip in the price so I don't know what is good tip for when I go with out him. ?? We recently dove in the Keys and when I tipped the divemaster I was clueless as to if I was reasonable ( I think it was generous - hope so! )

I saw on several of the dive operations web sites that they add it onto the bill. So watch for that.
