During a trip to Mexico a couple of weeks ago, I completed 3 of the 4 dives needed for my Deep Diver Specialty. Unfortunately a diver on our boat had an accident and the trip was cut short, so I didn't complete the last dive. I'll be in Bonaire May 17-24 and hope to do the last deep dive (130 feet) there. Does anyone know of a PADI instructor who can do that with me and how much that would cost? My diving right now is set up through Bonaire Dive and Adventure, but I'm assuming I could work with any instructor on this.

Thanks,
Dave

Dave,

Have you sent a note to Bonaire Dive & Adventure asking them? IF they're a PADI shop they probably have an instructor on staff that they could use.

I sent them a message through their website but didn't get a response. I will probably call if I don't hear anything, but since Bonaire diving seems so unstructured, I figured I'd try this route as well.

David, Bas Noij could most likely help you out as well...

You can make arrangements at any local PADI shop once you get here. Be sure you have all the dives logged and signed and it will be a simple matter. I am sure BD&A has any number of instructors who would be able to complete your specialty.

you certainly do not have to go to 130 feet to get your deep diver specialty...No where does PADI or any other dive agency make that requirement

I am sorry but just about ANY dive operation on Bonaire can support this. Why anyone would bother with putting up with the person that runs BDA I cannot conceive. As a Trimix instructor I can assure that ALL the best divers that I know have been denied access by this individual. There is a well known tech diver who advocates not diving with strokes. Seldom have I seen a more applicable situation for such sage advice particularly IF you consider 130 deep.

A few developments:

1) I ended up doing the final deep dive today at a local lake. Not quite as nice as Bonaire, but sufficient. I think the requirement was for a 100 foot dive, but this instructor likes to try for 130 (we ended up at 105 in the lake).

2) BDA got back to me a few days ago from my email on this. They said it wouldn't be an issue getting someone (although now it's not needed).

Thanks for all the comments. Looking forward to my first time in Bonaire next month!

Dave

John Smith,

a few points:

"I am sorry but just about ANY dive operation on Bonaire can support this."

You are correct.

"Why anyone would bother with putting up with the person that runs BDA I cannot conceive."

Who are you referring to?

"As a Trimix instructor I can assure that ALL the best divers that I know have been denied access by this individual."

Denied access by whom to what?

"There is a well known tech diver who advocates not diving with strokes."

There? At BDA? Bonaire Dive & Adventure does not currently offer technical diving activities. They are however collaborating closely with Caribbean Gas Training Inc., who do offer logistics and guiding.

"Seldom have I seen a more applicable situation for such sage advice particularly IF you consider 130 deep."

As you know there is indeed no safe diving with gases not containing helium beyond 100'. In any situation.

All the best,

Benji
