October 1991.
Bud, Randy, Sondra, me.

End of 3 hour east coast trench snorkel, we are in about 5 feet of water inside Lac Bay and all 4 of us find ourselves eye level with a brownish gray bullshark 4 yards in front of us.

I think we're lucky to come upon him. Was he 5 feet or 7 feet long?
But we inadvertently backed him into a reef alcove.

What happens next happens very fast: But I can still play and replay what unfolds in my mind's eye like in slow motion. Shark's fins and 1/4 of its body are out of water as it wriggles over top of reef that is only in 8 inches of water. Bull Shark didn't choose his exit THROUGH the four of us.

Sondra's mask was so fogged she never saw it.

I recently saw the ultimate in reef stupidity on MTV's "JACKASS."
They were attempting to attract big 8 foot hammerheads with copious vats of rancid chum so they could ride the hammerheads like horses, dolphins, who knows.

One guy was clothed in about five 3 foot long dead baitfish anchored into his wetsuit with fishing hooks. He then hopped off the chumboat and snorkeled right in the chumfield hoping to attract hammerheads.
No luck, he didn't even get a bite.
Or get killed.
Darn!

The episode was only aired a few weeks ago and it repeats alot so you might get to see it.

Until then the dumbest thing I ever saw on the reef were naked snorkelers from Sorobon heading out in 18 inches of water with their dangling participles hovering above all the Moray holes in Lac bay shallows. I think we witnessed this event the day after Dee Scarr of "Touch De Sea" showed us how to feed hot dogs to Moray eels.

Bull Sharks, Morays, and Sea Urchins.

The bull shark story is true (Metman, we were outside the reef coming in from the Trench). It was about 5.5-6 ft long. The fun part was when we were watching it swim parallel to, and on the reef, and it decided to come pay us a visit. Suddenly the water turned warmer! What a fun experience with a magnificent animal.

Besides the morays, it is the long-spined black sea urchins at Sorobon that leads to split infinitives and "sore-o-buns".

Nevertheless, both inside and outside of Sorobon Reef is a favorite, especially late afternoon with the sun at an acute angle picking out the incredible colors on the juveniles. wow.
