Jerry--the biologist on staff with BDA--said it was only the third time he'd seen one in (I think he said) 16 years of living in Bonaire.

So there we were, on the boat, at the dock, ready to go to Small Wall. There's a big and dark something right under us (or to the side of us.) Yes, folks, it was a freaking MANTA RAY!!! I think it had to have been about 10' across. At least that was the general consensus.

So, I and another guy get our masks on and jump in, but by that time it had, of course, gone. And, no, nobody got a photo. If Jerry and the rest of the crew and guests hadn't seen it, I would never have believed my own eyes. Why, oh why, couldn't it have waited a few more minutes? Or why couldn't we have been doing a shore dive instead of sitting on the boat?

That was a day (December 29th) for seeing amazing things when we were ABOVE water. Over at Small Wall, a sudden burst of flying fish came out of nowhere. There must have been at least a hundred, maybe two hundred, maybe more? (Is this possible?) They looked like an entire squadron of flashing silver. And, no, nobody got a photo of that, either. It was over in seconds. But it was still amazing. Serendipity!

I was sitting on the Dem Laman doc that same day. I did see two schools of flying fish. I did not see the Manta ray but saw and eagle ray and sting ray that same day.

Hmmm...what was it about December 29, 2007? Something in the water?

Sounds like it was an extra-special day in Bonaire.
