thanks Dennis but unless I'm blind that site does not give water temp-only air. Purty pics though.

Lydia,

If you look at the bottom of the reefcam capture, you'll see the water temp.

The webcam water temperature has been at 82.5 for some time now since the temperature probe has not worked for, oh, I'm guessing at a least a year or more. Jake and/or Dan have just set it to always read 82.5 degrees.

It would be thoughtful of the webcam operators, who have known better than we of it's demise, to say that on the web page.

We all know that things, especially electronics, long in the water go bad. And sometimes cannot be repaired quickly. But.... I believe is downright unfriendly to deceive loyal and new viewers at all, let alone over this long a time.

Glen, that would be Dan or Jake. Now that I've "said the magic word" hopefully they can give us an update, and read your suggestion :-) However, this is on the main webcam page (when you type in www.bonairewebcams.com

quote:

February, 2005 - We tried fixing the underwater temperature probe and hardware several times to no avail. As such the current UW temp is invalid and fake, and will remain such until we completely replace the system with something more reliable.

TKS, Cindy.

But wouldn't it be thoughtful if that info was on the Reefcam page, in the temperature block in place of the present misinformation? Not a difficult change for our gurus. (I count both as friends, in case anyone here believes I am being too harsh!).

It is nice that that sentence is on the main page but there are those silly people like me who use the reefcam page alone, in my case as my browser Home Page, or who link directly to the Reefcam page.

I learned long ago that it is always best to locate info closest to where it applies, then elsewhere. :–)

Ok, your name is 'Cynde'. I am annoyed sometimes when an extra 'n' is added to my name and then I totally misuse yours! Ah well, never claimed perfection here!

And right after you said your 'magic word': Glen. How kind of you. :–)

Glen...thanks for the chuckle...I get clyde, cyanide, and cindy...it doesn't really bother me much anymore...i will even spell it out for someone, and they still get it wrong. My mom used to email me, and it was always "hi cyanide"...she got used to spell checker and that's what it suggests instead of my name.

Like I said, hopefully our "gurus" will chime in and address your request. As the webcams are separate from BT:-)

I know Dan's still working on something with respect to a new underwater temperature probe, but per Glen's suggestion I've gone and removed all reference to a current UW Temp from the Bonaire WebCams web site.

Cyanide??? Was that a slight variation on 'li'll poison'??? Well. they say 'Mother knows best'. :–)

Jake, after my two negative posts above it occurred to me that a yet friendlier thing would be to put a sentence or two where the temperature data was on the ReefCam page going something like:

'Salt water has eaten the temperature probe whose current temperature reading is normally displayed here; repairs are being worked on.

'The usual winter temperatures are from xxx to xxx. The usual summer temperatures are from xxx to xxx. The highest recorded here was yyy on zzz, the lowest yyy on zzz'.

After repair, you can replace the first sentence with the current temp sentence and leave the remainder as added info. There must be a real problem for it to be taking Dan this long!

Nice idea Glen, but:

1) It was electrical component failure unrelated to salt water combined with occasional fauna "intervention" (rats and humans chewing/cutting cables without knowing what they were for). Considering it's been over a year and a half, I'd rather not promise that the probe will be back until Dan has a solution we know will work.

2) We have no record of highs and lows for the UW Temperature probe so the information you suggest cannot be accurately provided.

So, for now, any reference to an UW temp will remain off the site.

Jake

I do have some new technology I'm testing for the UW temperature probe. It's not yet ready for shipment to Bonaire, but may be in the next month or so. The system needs more testing yet.

I have to wonder if airport security would freak out at a large spool of cable with various electronics, so perhaps this should get shipped to Bonaire via ship.
