It was my understanding in Feb when we were there that the property had been bought and there was no more public access.

Are you confusing it with the Andrea sites? Which is private but the developer promised public access although it has been blocked or hard to get to while they have been putting in roads and such.

We were diving at Andrea last August,. but apparently ( according to a sign at Buddys) we were not supposed to be diving there then. We also dove by the construction sites down south figuring it wouild only become more difficult to dive there as time wears on.

I wonder if we could put in some nice eybolts in the rock and bring along an emergency ladder to descend? Hey, maybe a whole new catagory of technical diving!

Any updates on the Ladder?
We leave for Bonaire in about 23 hours and I was ready to do the Giant Stride off the rock at Oil Slick Leap. I've mentall prepped myself for this "big step" over the past few months....I'd hate to think I wasted all that energy because the ladder is gone.

Kris,

We are also leaving Sat AM. Which airline/flight are you leaving traveling on? Our final leg leaves from Maimi on DCA at 2pm.

Herman:
We are flying via San Juan. Won't get to Bonaire until 7:45pm, but I can't wait. 24 hours until I touch the sacred sand again!

A group of 5 of us will be at Buddy Dive. We've never stayed there but really enjoyed the Restaurant when we were there last year. Thought we'd give it a try.

If you see a strange group of 5 divers at the restaurant (yeah, like that will make us unique) give a shout!

We are staying at Buddy as well. There are 4 of us, 2 couples. Bet we will meet at the "dive briefing" to get the park tag. Look for a "Gypsy Divers" shirt from North Carolina.

Herman:
Didn't get your reply before we left. Sorry we missed you at Buddy Dive. I trust you had a fantastic week? We certainly did. I got in 18 dives and found the octopus on Buddy's Reef on my last night dive. As always, no complaints, just sad to leave.

Had a great week and like you, sad to leave. We never did see that octopus. Oh well, next time.

No, we did not. I heard from 2 different people that 2-3 sea horses were seen around it however. I saw your post identifying us, thanks. We were dropping off Jake's donuts. Who are you flying? AJ? Maybe we were lucky but DCE was only 30 mins late both ways (on time takeoff from Bonaire) and both delays were for weather in Miami, more on them when I get a trip report done.

OK, so about the ladder?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Kris Warmann on Tuesday, June 18, 2002 - 8:46 pm:     Edit PostPrint Post

We just came back on Saturday.
There is no longer a ladder at Oil Slick Leap.
The group at Buddy Dive told us that the Marine Park removed the ladder to avoid overdiving at that site. We did check out the site from shore and there is a big sign stating that shore diving is not permitted. Also, it appears that some construction was being done. About 12 inches of rock had been removed from the area where the ladder used to be. Nobody seemed to know why.

Looks like OSL is now only a boat dive.
