The Rest Of My Bonaire Pictures can be seen by clicking on this link. They were shot with a Sea and Sea MX-5 at Eighteenth Palm, the Hilma Hooker, and Jefferson Davis.

Stanley - great pictures! I just viewed them with my students. They would like to know if anyone out there could give us a brief history of the Hilma Hooker. Thanks!

Nice photos , Stan...I particularly like yournight dive shot of the purple anemone, and the "divers and bubbles" shot. Great way to hang on to the memories, isn't it?

You're in luck, Hazel. I was cleaning my desk yesterday and filed an old article from 1995 about the Hilma Hooker.

The ship was a drug runner that pulled into port with engine trouble. She remained tied to the main pier for quite a while and continued to deteriorate. The owners would not come forward because of the drug smuggling evidence and yet the government could not dispose of the ship without getting rid of the evidence either.

It was decided (after a lot of talking, arguing, etc.) that the ship would be sunk on purpose rather than waiting for her to sink. No one wanted a wreck blocking the main pier. Some of the dive people picked the current location and after some stop-and-go situations it eventually led to the successful creation of a dive-able wreck for Bonaire. That was in 1984.

There are pictures of the Hilma Hooker sinking at Rendez Vous Restaurant.
She is 235 feet long and the sand bottom is at about 100 feet depth. The ship rests on her side. You can still see the large propellers and the wheel. She has three dive moorings: one at each end and one in the middle. Plus the Hilma Hooker is also a favorite shore dive location as well.

Stan, I feel like I was there! How wonderful! Like Bob Deal, divers and bubbles speaks to me.And I always go for a Blue Tang! But the Purple Anemone, resting like some Amethyst crown in a chest of jewels is the real treasure of the Sea IMHO. "Bert",with the Hooker is, in the true meaning of the word 'awesome'. In his own way, Martin is too. That may be your best work.At least, as a former Red Cross instructor, I think he's impressive. He must trust you enormously. Or, he trusts sharks!

Thanks for all the wonderful comments! I was really excited about Hazel showing my pictures to the kids in her class...thank you Hazel. Bonaire is a place I would absolutely want to visit again...the people were friendly, the diving was good, and the food was memorable. I'll make a deal with everyone on this board...if you take up a collection to pay for another trip back to Bonaire for me, I'll take even more pictures and honor special requests. I'll even eat at your favorite restaurants for you! Who could refuse such an offer?

All that talent. And generous to a fault into the bargain...What could we say to such an offer? ...Oh, I know....In yer dreams, Stan. In your dreams. 'Course if you brought me along to carry the lens caps........(smiling in, I hope, a winning fashion)
