There is an article in this week's Bonaire Reporter (page 7) about the growth of kiteboarding on Bonaire, and even goes so far as to state "Head down to Kite Beach located at Atlantis ...". And "The man behind the scene is roguish Roan Jaspers... Roan describes HIS kite site (emphasis is mine, not the article's) ..."

I know Bonaire is there to be shared and enjoyed by everyone, but what other dive sites are in jeopardy of being taken over by kiteboarders? How do we coexist and ensure the safety of both kiters and divers?

If all goes well, we'll be on the island by tomorrow. We love to dive Atlantis and it is definately on my list of things to do.

there's plenty of reef down there...not to sure that red beryl or even margate bay (especially to the north) are not better dives anyway...

As long as they use the beach-length of Atlantis alone inside the drop-off and don't whistle up and down, north and south, along the shore in both directions beyond one dive site as has been reported here earlier.

Is there now a yellow, dive site marker stone at Atlantis? Notice of a kiting location? Warning for divers of the possible presence of kiters, as in when coming back to shore from a dive when no kiter was there on entry, an hour before?

Atlantis is one of our favorites! Early this year we had a dangerous situation there, almost being kited over! Since than we surface as close to the beach as possible. Next time we will bring a deco buoy as a warning... Solution could be if the kiters would use the beach north of the old fishershut.

In April, kiters were "overflowing" into the shallows of Margate, Red Beryl and Fish Hut on a daily basis (we dive Margate almost every day at least once). And there is a PINK kiters' site rock at Atlantis now!

Put a dive flag up when you are diving.

2 weeks ago we were driving near Atlantis/Margate and clocked some kiters at over 75 km!

If anybody needs advice on how to properly deploy a SMB (Surface Marker Buoy), please let me know, I'm more than happy to assist.

Benji
