We'll be going to BON for the first time june 5-15th. Our first dive trip too; we're pretty unexperienced. We're not sure if we're going to be doing any night dives, should we bring a light for the daytime dives? To bring out the color and such?
Thanks,
Adam

Hi Adam,
If you dive the Hilma Hooker (wreck)...you might want a light when entering the cargo area (very easy and wide open). Vis in Bonaire is usually good to excellent so in shallower water...no need for a light. However there are small hiding places in the coral and it can be fun shining a light to see what is there...but most experienced divers will try to avoid shining light in the eyes of marine creatures when doing so...not a nice experience for them! If you dive deeper...it is nice to have a light to veiw the true colors of certain sponges and coral.

If you only want a light for the Hilma Hooker wreck...you can easily rent one from your dive shop.

Did you get the snow we got over here in Minnesota today?

Enjoy Bonaire!

Scott

Take a light! Night diving on Bonaire is fantastic! Octopi Tarpon so many critters that sleep during the day. Remember to plan on bringing all your batteries back. Day dives, no light necessary too much to see in a lifetime.

TAKE A LIGHT! Or just purchase one at Bruce Bowkers Caribn Inn, they have competitive prices. Night diving rules.

That said, DON'T GET A BIG LIGHT.yOU ARE NOT GOING TO BE LANDING AIRCRAFT, YOU ARE LOOKING AT FISH THAT GET SCARED OF LIGHT. A nice Underwater Kinetics four AA flashlight is planty, I hold my hand over the end for most of the dive and use my fingers as a douser and shutter. Sometimes we turn all the lights off, amazing what you can see in the dark!
We dive at dawn too.

The tarpon at night prefer not having a 'landing light', or any light pointed at them. Shade your light and they will 'sit on your shoulder'. Bonefish are shy also. And some reef denizens run from a bright light and you never see them!! Even a 2 AA MightyLite can be bright enough.

A small light is useful in the daytime for looking in holes. Surprises sometimes.
