I know the chance of seeing a whale shark is slim to none. Has anyone spotted one in Bonaire? Where is the best dive site to see one? My wife and I will be making our first trip to Bonaire Jan 11th for 9 days and are so excited!

There have been whale shark sightings in the last couple of weeks and quite a few sightings in recent years.
I don't think whale sharks hang out at any particular dive site.
With or without whale sharks, you will love Bonaire.
Welcome to BT, Joshua!

joshua, welcome to bonairetalk. while it would be great to see a whale shark on your first trip to bonaire, it is unlikely...just as it is unlikely to see one on your 10th, 50th, or 100th trip. but you could...they are not at all common but have been spotted. nonetheless, what you will see will be amazing. you will love it. don't forget to post a trip report when you return. we have 46D 20H and 13M till we leave for bonaire (but we don't really count the days...yeah right)

Thank you for your responses I cannot wait to get there. If my wife and I truly love it we may look into buying a cheap bungalow to retire in there. We are both in our 30's but I think it would be a good investment depending upon how the real estate laws work in Bonaire.

Welcome Joshua,
Some 15 years back we were staying at the Divi. My wife 1st dive in Bonaire was off the Divi Dock with her DM. You guessed it A whale shark.
I was at the bar. The WS did not stick around. It was going So to N. at 50'. Est was 45-50'. But ever see a beer can under water, looks like a 1/2 a gal can.
She had this smile on her face for two weeks. Only three people got to see it.
The dive boats tend to keep them away it seems?
I have apx 1000 dives in Bonaire and never have seen a WS. Only 3 frog fish to date.
Bonaire stands alone in it's diving, it's people, and it's charm. I think you might fall in love with it, just like most of the people on BT. Enjoy.

My wife and I were in BON Nov 17 - Dec 3rd our 6th trip in 4 years, of course we have always hoped to see whale sharks but alas we missed them once again, but one was sited crusing the coast from Invisibles to Bari reef. We saw a hugh Manta ray at oil slick leap that was sited all the way up and down the coast and passed within 5 feet of the Buddy Dive dock. We saw Dolphins, and lots of them from North Blenhem to Buddy Reef. One of our best dive vacations ever.

Has anyone heard or been to the new sea aquarium that has opened in Atlanta, Georgia!!!!! The founder of Home Depot actually funded the place and it is the biggest one in the world so they say! Now, even better, they have 2 whale sharks there too!!! So, I figure that is about as close as I am going to come to seeing one as I never seem to be on Bonaire when they migrate by! We are going there this summer after dropping my daughter off at college in Galveston, Texas on the return trip. My youngest son, Brandon is so looking forward to see a whale shark! Me too!
