Top sites for photographers?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Clay Lansdown on Monday, March 25, 2002 - 8:28 am:     Edit PostPrint Post

I have found that any site can be the best at some particular time. There are some sites that will - for some period of time - have seahorses or frogfish - which tend to stay in place for fairly long times. Finding those will require local knowledge. Your dive shop for shore dives or divemaster if you are on a boat dive, can point you to those sites.

I have made dives for on the same site for several consecutive dives and seen something different on each dive.

All that being said, my favorite site is Rappel, mostly because it's so dramatic with a lot of variation in elevation and a lot of cracks and big crevices.

My husband got this shot of a frogfish at "Something Special" dive site.

Gloria
Been there done that.

Your file is probably too big for this site. It can't be bigger than 50 K's.. make is smaller in size - that worked for my seahorse. Can you ask him at what depth the frogfish was.. I found two and they were both at around 45-50 feet (we probably found the same one at Something Special).

I have yet to find a site that -isn't- good for photography!

Alan,
The file is the right size, its the person trying to post it that has the problem. My husband agreed that you probably saw the same ones.
Here goes one more try!

OK, but mine was yellow and his looks orange. Mine was on the coral and his was on a sponge.

Will try and get mine on for you to see...here's hoping it does not take three tries.

Russ, one of my all time favorite sites for uw pictures is the salt pier, especially when the sun is filtering down - there is just so much variety of fish there!!! Beautiful!

Gloria...that is one heck of a "hand me down"!! What a lucky lady you are! I, too, will be testing out a new digital camera with a housing in May while we are there at the Divi. Perhaps we will run into each other under water with the equipment....can't wait to see what it can do. First time with underwater digital. The Nikonos V is always on my "wish list" however! Have fun and maybe we will see you down there...we are on island May 18 thru June 1 this trip. Ayo. Carole (Shutterbug)

Gloria, per chance you are not on Air Jamaica that day, are you? I know Niki Harris will be on our flight from Montego Bay into Bonaire that afternoon. Wouldn't it be funny if we were on the same flights? I am looking forward to playing with the newest digital in the house...it has not yet arrived, but I am anxiously awaiting its arrival at my camera shop...he gives me great deals as I am a very good customer of his. Have been going there for as long as I can remember. Happy Birthday to your hubby and I know he will have fun with his birthday gift. HE, too, is a lucky fella! Ayo. Carole

Carole,
No we are on American, my husband is a very frequent flier so we are using miles. I was hoping you might be on our flight. Chuck (my husband) has his camera to start practicing with and the housing is in route to our dive shop. He is a very good customer of the dive shop! Try to come to the Rum Punch Party at Buddy's on Friday nights and maybe we'll meet up there.

Gloria...that is one heck of a shot on your profile...where was that taken? You're flying in from Nevada, eh? You are addicted to Bonaire, obviously, to fly all that distance. It never fails to amaze me the number of far away places folks come from just to enjoy Bonaire and her beauty and people.

Faith..I agree..getting back on topic...there are no bad places to shoot underwater photography on Bonaire! Ayo. Carole (shutterbug)

My profile picture is one of my very favorites! We were on the Sea Dancer in the Turks & Caicos. We stayed at one mooring for about a day and 1/2 and about 7 sharks stayed with us the whole time. It sure was exciting! Here are a couple of others Chuck took!

Check the size of your file... BT only takes 50K
..that was my problem so I had to make the picture file smaller...one way or another.

Russ,

Do you have a space between the 'e' of 'image' and the first bracket? Doesn't work that way.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Glen Reem on Saturday, March 30, 2002 - 1:24 pm:     Edit PostPrint Post

What I was trying to say is that there must be no space between 'image' and the first bracket..

thanks - out of the 2 rolls of film we shot there was only a handful that turned out well. it was my first time with uw photograpy (rented mmII) and i am definatly hooked on uw photography - i just wish it wasn't so expensive! i wish larger files could be posted (i'll have to figure out how to do the website thing) because we did have a few turn out well enough to enlarge - i enlarged/framed the first and third of the above (24X36) and have tehm hanging in my workplace (i wish that didn't cost so much too!).

If you're interested in learning a bunch more (and getting an expensive taste in gear) you might try attendng the Nikon School of Underwater Photograpy (sessions at the Divi Tiara on Cayman Brac and at the Divi Flamingo on Bonaire).

Faith and I did the one on the Brac a few years ago, and improved our photography a great deal in the course of that week.

We have a digital shootout coming up in Bonaire this November. See: http://www.scubadiving.com/feature/news/12202digitalshootout.shtml
See also: http://www.theshootout.org/bonaire.html

The interesting thing here is they are planning workshops using Photoshop, etc. for post production of the digital captures. And they are having digital gear to try out.
