With the forecasts for hurricane looking pretty bad, what do you think that will do to Bonaire this year?

Didn't Bonaire get affected last year?

Bonaire has the lowest statistical probability of being hit by a hurricane of any island in the Caribbean.
That does not mean it's impossible.
Ivan veered north of us at the last minute. It was a near miss.
We suffered more damage from Lenny, which was 150 miles away but came from the west and spawned damaging waves (while the sun shine failed to alert those away from the coast that anything was wrong).
Theoretically we are too close to the Equator for hurricanes. They theoretically form north of 10 degrees north, and we're just at 11 degrees--too far south for the proper spin to occur.
We don't even have a hurricane shelter.
If you want to play the odds, you've got a good chance of avoiding hurricanes here.
Tish

Hi Tish
We're arriving on September 30th...my concern isn't so much for Bonaire, but we get there via San Juan, which is quite a bit more susceptible...do you (or anyone else) know if American Airlines would get us there another via another route, if San Juan was hit?

American Airlines flies TO San Juan, but American Eagle flies FROM San Juan to Bonaire, so Bonaire would not receive an American Eagle flight if the San Juan airport could not operate.
However, you could ask American Airlines to reroute you onto its flight to Curacao from Miami in the event that San Juan airport closed down.
I fly back and forth a lot, and it's always a bit of a gamble, but if you keep an eye on the situation, keep reconfirming your flight and checking the weather, you should have some time to consider options, including asking American Airlines to put you on another airline which flies to Curacao or Aruba.
I have always managed to get home to Bonaire, although twice (out of many, many flights) I have arrived a day late.
Good luck!
Tish
