we dove last may and were required to do an orientation dive (dove with toucan diving) - will we be required to do that again this year (may 2002)?

Yes. By the rules of the Bonaire National Marine Park you are required to do a check-out dive as part of being able to purchase your annual dive tag ($10, valid for one calendar year). However, most if not all dive shops trust you to do the orientation dive on your own and don't supervise this practice - all based on the honor system.

It appears that there are many rules for diving Bonaire. The ones I recall...First there is no gloves, no chemical light sticks (whatever they are called), now there is an orientation dive? What else do I need to know?

Hi,
I am also interested to hear about information about regulations so we don't pack gear we don't need. We were just about to stock up on light sticks for night dives as there are the regulations we are used to, but I would be very embrassed caught breaking a rule. It there a link to a Code of Conduct for the Marine National Park?

See http://www.bmp.org/html/diving_bonaire.html for the list of rules.
