Hi all,

Cinde Wirth, a semi-regular BTer and regular visitor to Bonaire, is also working on a graduate degree at Indiana University. As part of her studies she needs to perform a survey regarding scuba divers and shipwrecks. Cinde asked if we would mind if she posted her survey here, and we offered to do it for her.

Attached to this post is a Word document with the list of questions Cinde is looking for responses to (there are 17 questions), and her deadline is November 24, 2004.

If anyone has any questions, or wants to send her a completed survey, drop her a note at cwirth@indiana.edu. She assures me that all individual responses will be kept confidential.

Cinde will be back on Bonaire at the end of December in case any of you want to talk to her about the results of the survey in person (presuming you will be here too) :-)

A big "Thank You" to Jake and everyone who has responded so far! Keep them coming...And since most research subjects are compensated- I'll owe a Bright (or a Coke) over the holidays to all who respond & are on-island then ;)
Cinde

Cinde, in that case, I filled it out three times. LOL

Good luck with your research. Looking forward to meeting again in Bonaire.

I'd love to help you out, but the only wreck I have ever saw was the Hilma Hooker on Bonaire and found that not too interesting.

I dive strictly for the sea life, corals and beauty of the ocean. If you ever do any research on the recreational diver, I would be happy to help you. My dive instructor couldn't believe that I don't go to Turks and Caicos, Palau to do wreck diving. It just doesn't do anything for me, am I alone in this thinking. Feeling a little like an outsider looking in on this one.

No Debbie, you're not alone. I have no interest in wrecks. The few that I have dove, I've hung around outside while my husband poked around inside. I babysit the trucks when they do the Hilma Hooker! I am a fair weather, open water, WARM water diver. I am enjoying a sport that is supposed to be fun, and that is what is fun for me. (And I do not like night dives either!) And that is OK as far as I'm concerned!

Debbie, You are not alone! Wreck diving is not for me. Seb does the Hilma Hooker -- I watch. Wrecks hold no interest to me at all. To be certified as a PADI Advanced Open Water Diver, one has to do a wreck dive. I liked that one (a small boat off of Sunset House, Grand Cayman) because I could move a small pipe and a small popper shrimp would snap his claw.
Perhaps it is because I've watched too many 'B' movies where the monster in the deep always hid in a submersed wreck and if I get too close...

So glad to hear I am not alone! I went to do the survey and realized I was useless to this young lady since I don't do wreck diving. Nice to know there are more of us out there that like to just dive and see the fish and coral and be happy with that.

Hi everyone-
Actually, even if you do not like wreck diving, please send me a survey, if you don't mind. As I replied to another non-wreck diver who sent me a survey, "often those who feel they have nothing to contribute give the best insight." The only required qualification is that you are a diver.
If I don't have a submitted survey from you, I can't consider your point of view on not wreck diving. This is a very valuable perspective in terms of my research. To be quite honest, wreck dives are my least favorite dive (besides cold water)...never in a million years did I think I would end up as an u/w archaeologist!

Oh, and WOW- I haven't been referred to as a young lady in a few years :-) (mostly as "ma'am" now!) Did I say how much I like you Debbie?
