Is it possible to get a prescription mask in Bonaire? I am having difficulty in getting my prescription mask at home in time to my Bonaire hollydays, so I wonder if the dive shops or opticians in Bonaire do that.

If timing is a problem, I wouldn't count on any business on Bonaire being able to help.

Also, I just contacted the largest optician on the island, Ram's Optica, and while they can measure you for the glasses (in terms of what sort of correction you'd need), they have no means with which to make an optically corrected dive mask.

Sorry,

Jake

Timing is a problem: we will only be in Bonaire for 2 weeks, unfortunately! (is there any hope of getting stranded?) Any way, Jake, thank you very much for your help
António

Dear Antonio,

I would suggest asking your local optician.. They should then inquire to Bolle who is a large manufacturer of sporting glasses who work with the prescription sent by your optician. If they do not do this for masks... then they should know some company who does..

Good luck,
Patty Hazen

You might want to try posting an inquiry on the Rodale Scuba diving forum. I have seen many messages posted there about prescription masks, including sources, just can't remember them, also try searching their archives. Good LucK!!

We were on Bonaire last month. My kids hired prescription masks from Sand Dollar +4 and +1.5. 6$ a day I think. The lenses are thick glass , they simply slot into masks made to take them, no leaks, no problems. We also saw lenses and masks for sale in Buddy's Dive Shop in town.

Thank you all, you have been very helpful! This kind of response really shows a great group and makes you feel that Bonaireans - visitors and residents - are a special bunch!

Antonio,
Have you checked out your local dive shop? When my husband needed to replace his prescription mask we found that the dive shop had masks that could take drop in lenses and the lenses in stock! All we needed was the prescription for the lenses. He has since used the mask and everthing, including his vision, was fine.

The local dive shops have only the usual masks. where lenses can be glued in the inside of the face plate, and they would send them elsewhere for this, but the timing was uncertain. However, I finally found an optician with connection to a dive equipment retailer that did exactly what you mention! Thanx a lot!
