Paul, I have been there in July, and experienced nothing even resembling "cold". Water seems to be a fairly constant 84 degrees.... nice and warrrrrm. There was slight diminished vis., but only because Hurricane Claudette was making an appearance elsewhere in the Caribbean. Still great vis. though.

I don't believe the 'diving side' of Bonaire, the calm, low current western, lee side has true upwellings along the length of the coast. Sometimes there are strong currents at the north and south tips of the island.

I once saw a 'boil' (very strong upwelling actually boiling the surface) a few hundred yards offshore south of Red Slave, caused by current flowing past the south end of the island. At the same time, divers coming in from diving south along the shore said they were caught in a strong downwelling and carried well below 100 feet before they swam across and out of the flow. An early guide to diving Bonaire also cautions about strong offshore currents at Barca Bartol up north.

I've been going to Bonaire for years and would have said that cold upswelling could never happen. Then in July of 2002 it was so cold that we didn't do many dives. We were accustomed to temps ~82, that year it was 78. We have never seen it that cold since...it was a rude awakening in July 02

Carole, I'll be back in September...had to have surgery in March to remove a cyst in my middle ear...wasn't allowed to fly or work for weeks...now I am allowed to fly but don't want to work... I'll be there in September but don't know if I'll be allowed to dive...check up in July will determine that...

I will keep my fingers crossed for you, Gregg. Hope it all went well. We will miss each other again this year....someday! Carole

PS I know you....you'll find another "activity" at the Divi if you can't dive in September!! LOL.
