John B says: "If you follow the rope out from the pier to the reef, you will find a bottle marker we left with all of our names on it." See Bel-Mar etc. discussion thread.

I don't want this idea to spread or we'll have the equivalent of graffiti on the reef. Don't leave permanent souvenirs of yourselves on the reef. Please.

PLEASE PLEASE, say this is just a joke!

Jerry, are you talking to John B or to me?

What I mean is: Do you want it to be a joke that I would object to littering and graffiti on the reef, or a joke that someone actually left such a thing?

Nikki, your point is well taken and you are indeed on the right track. I don't think that too many of our visitors would follow suit and leave a calling card for those that follow, but in case any one is of the mind to do so...please...make a donation to the Marine Park or the Klein Bonarie foundation as a way for Bonaire to remember you!

I realy don't like to here about divers doing things like that. But, look at Paris Frace, talk about going nuts with graffiti. We can make a mess just about anyplace.
We visitors MUST RESPECT the waters, the land, and the air, for when it's gone, well you know the story.

I checked with the dive shop concerned and they informed me that this "grafitti" was actually a bottle attached by string to the mooring block.
They also informed me that as the names had faded it was now a little memento in the dive shop of a happy customer.
I can assure you that there was no reef damage.

Thanks for that reassurance, Steve. And the clarification of Jerry's comment too. I just found myself remembering all the beautiful natural places I have visited and the number of times I found Kilroy Was Here type stuff. I somehow believe that Bonaire's Marine Park will be treasured by divers in a responsible way. And I'm relieved that the bottle was not permanent.
