Can someone help identify the fish in this photo? I believe that the yellow tailed fish are Yellow-tailed snapper, but can't identify the coral colored fish. Can anyone help?

Hi Wayne, I'm going to guess Blackbar Soldierfish.

I'm with Mary, Blackbar Solderfish. Humann shows their body being red instead of silver, but the black bar is pretty distinctive and the shape is right.

I thought that it might be (I looked in the Humann book), but this fish doesn't appear to have the dorsal fin configuration of the Blackbar Soldierfish. Any other ideas?

Wayne that fin could be laying down in your picture, maybe, possibly. I can't find anything out that's even close.

They lay their fins down, change color, wear isopods, inhabit the wrong territory, they are TRYING to not be recognized.
It's a blackbar soldierfish. Otherwise it would be a blackbar something else, 'cause it's got a big black bar.

Actually the yellow fish look more like goatfish to me. The bottom seems to be a lot flatter, whereas a yellow-tail snapper is more horizontally symmetrical. The yellow stripe on a yellow-tail snapper runs right down the lateral line of the fish. They yellow stripe on these fish is above the lateral line. You can see a good pic of the goatfish here: http://www.wgn.net/~fabio/gallery/bonaire9.htm

The reddish fish is a blackbar soldierfish. The dorsal fin can be retracted to lay smooth along the back. When approached, the fish usually erects the dorsal fin to make itself seem larger.

Hope this helps,
Ken

Thanks Ken, I'm going to second the goatfish ID. If I squint, I can see barbels on the second fish from the top.

The picture isn't close enough to see them, but they look more like goatfish than snappers. And usually you either see snappers alone or in very uniform schools. This bunch looks more like a group of unruly first graders... or a goatfish school.

Also put in a vote for Goat fish, here's a group at the Salt Pier. Note, only one of them shows his barbels.

Yellow Goat fish
