Where does the double reef begin and end? How deep is it? Where is the best place to hit it? I'm an advanced diver, but I like to stay above 90 ft. Any advise??

Hi Todd,

Not sure where the reef starts/ends. I know it is tward the southern end of the island. The double reef at Angle City is really nice. Seems like our max depth was around 90 ft but we did not spend a lot of time at that depth as the sand channel there was not very wide, maybe 100 ft or so and the second reef was at about 60 ft. We just crossed over the sand and onto the second reef. I have the book on Bonaire dive sites, I will see what it says.

What part of the US (world?) are you from? I took my rescue class with a Todd McBride.

Herman

Herman,

Sorry, not the same Todd. I live in Florida now, but I only have a PADI Advanced Open Water certification. Never had a rescue class.

We found the doudle reef last year on one of our last dives. We crossed at the Lake (I think) and went left. After awhile, we looked over and saw the Hilma Hooker so we crossed over to the beach side reef back up to 35ft and headed back to the lake. That was a great dive and a little out of the ordinary. I'm looking to try some more dives like that this December.

Let me know what you find out. Thanks.

Todd - what you did isn't 'out of the ordinary' but what many of us have done for years. Many years ago -- before knee problems and lots younger -- we dove almost the whole double reef. Note that we didn't go down to the reef in the areas that it was deeper than we wanted to go but did swim over it. As near as I can remember, it started near Pink Beach and went up past Lake. Some areas are deep and just islands - like at Invisables - and some are the basic reef like you saw. We piled coral by the road where we came out and went in at that place the next time....
I have an old 'reef map' from a while ago that I could try to scan. e-mail me at pegdiver@monmouth.com if you want me to try.
