We're heading back to Bonaire on Air Jam soon for our first visit since 9/11. Couple of questions:
1. I usually dive with Sea Snips (scissors) and a small knife clipped on my BC. If I pack these items in my checked luggage (not carry-on), will they create a hassle?

2. For the return, does the scheme of checking baggage early (eg, 11:00am) at Flamingo Airport for the afternoon AJ flight out still work?

3. Any other tips to avoid security delays either in-bound or out-bound?

Thanks-
J

Seaa snips were no problem in late July. I left the knives home. But I think they are ok in checked bags, but chose not to test it. They want no sharp objects in carry ons even nail clippers or scissors we were told.

The 11 AM worked for us, we then went to lunch. There were som Air Jam issues, see my trip report.

Don't carry batteries in your carry on.

All of you bags will be searched multiple times. Checked bags as you check in. Carry ons at the gate so pack accordingly. If you set off the metal director you get hand searched big time, so put any metal even your watch in your carry on.

For what its worth, when we flew Air Jamaica Boston/Bonaire, our check-in luggage was never searched. We checkin large Pelican cases with padlocks keeping them closed, so it would be pretty hard for them to do it without our knowing it.

The carryon was another matter - they have new xray equipment in Boston that picked up my snorkel in my carryon, and that got my bag searched, and quite thoroughly. And in Montego Bay they did random carryon searches that were very thorough as well.

When we flew to Bonaire 6/28-7/6/02 we had no problem with nail clippers in our carry on. They did search my carry on that had my regulator and dive computer. Our biggest problem was when we were leaving and they inspected all of our luggage at the airport check in. We had to take all the batteries out of our lights and cameras, which was no small task. Our friends did not have to remove any batteries so it must depend who inspects your bags. It was all worth a week in Paradise!
