Hey all, 20 days until these first timers leave for a 10 day trip. We have our own gear for the first time and were just wondering how other folks pack their's? Regulators and BCD's in carry on or in checked? Padded well? Also, just to verify what I think I found online, is the luggage allowance the same on the smaller AA Eagle plane from San Juan as it is on the larger one (2 checked, 1 carry on)? Thanks for any and all helpful hints.

We pack our BC's in checked and carry our regulators in carry on. I also carry my mask as I have prescriptions lenses and can't see well without them.

Our dive bag has the fins at the bottom then a BC then regs then the other BC, followed by wet suits etc. So far no problems.

Yes, the regulations are the same for the American Eagle flights. However, because the overhead bins and underseat space is small on the Eagle you will be asked to check "rolling" carryons or oversized backpacks planeside. The bag will be tagged as you board the bus. Once you get off the bus at the plane you hand it over to the handlers. When you get off in Bonaire you will pick it up at the plane. Your other luggage will be taken to the carousel in the airport.

I pack everything in my checked bag except dive computer and cameras. Regs, BC, fins, wetsuit, boots and mask in checked bag. Never had a problem. Just remember not to pack your knife in your carry on or you will end up losing it at the security point. I also pack a change of clothes and a swimsuit in my carry on, at least I can change and have a swim if my checked bag is lost.

One rolling carry on with BC, reg and computer, dive suit and fins. Yes this is regulation size carry on. And yes it gets red tagged in S.Juan, not a problem as you see it on and off in Bonaire. In my small day pack goes, camera, laptop and mask, one swim suit and a toothbrush.

Regs & computers/gauges & camera in carry on, all else in a checked bag. Be sure to label ALL your gear, mask to fins and everything in between.

Thanks for all the great advice. Seems like we'll check our bcd's because our carry-ons are full with regs, masks, cameras, and swimsuits. Sounds like it should be an adventure in San Juan what with the bus to the plane and all.

Curtis, when you are waiting in San Juan for your Bonaire flight to be called be sure to pay close attention to boarding announcements as the area is usually crowded and very noisy since so many island flights leave from there.
