You should see the variety of interesting high signs the people who lead the japanese tourists around the city use, some are quite elaborate, feathers and stuff on the end of a umbrella, cane, or stick.

We saw the same thing in Italy when the tour guides were taking their groups through Rome around the city sites. Perhaps a big flamingo on a stick, others could use a turtle or iguana

Here's our local guide "Charlie" in Shanghai last November. Our tour director "Diana" used that little umbrella for the three weeks we were there. When carried by our 6'4" fellow traveller you could not miss it. We had a great time and I even spotted a dive boat in Hong Kong.
