Can anyone who has flown out of Newark recommend a good place to park that is easy to get to the Continental terminal?

Have been using AVISTAR for many years. If you pay ahead of time it is cheaper... Ron

Debbie..We flew on the non stop Continental out of Newark last Feb & it was wonderful! I never want to go back to the way we used to do it. Sort of like when you get DSL, you never want to go back to dial up..
Regarding parking, we drive to the AirBrook parking lot on Rt 17 In Bergen County (Ridgewood) & they only charge a dollar a day to park & then take their bus directly to the airport. Roundtrip fare for 2 is $98..Works out great! :-)

I agree with using Avistar. We have had great success with them in all of the New York area airports. YOu can go on line and become an Express member (Free for the first year). Gives you a better discount rate that AAA. More importantly, they have your car and bill waiting for you when get to their lot. You just jump in and go. We are never kept waiitng to get their shuttle from the airline to their lot either..

Thanks guys. It is a little premature, as we don't do Newark until December, but I'm just a real organized guy. Just ask my wife. LOL LOL LOL I like that express member thing. Thanks Anne.

It is never premature if you are dealing with the New York,New Jersey airports. I already have a parking reservation for my FL trip in Oct.

These lots fill up fast. I would go online and sign up for the Express membership and make the reservation for Dec... what do you have to lose.

I had never been a fan of parking in NY/NJ but Avistar has won me over. and I don't think they are too expensive - beats parking at the airport lots. I don;t remember if they let you use the discount coupons along with the Express member ship but I always print them out anyway.

I am NOT a fan of airportdiscountparking.com (ADP). Last November we drove from Philly to Newark to make the Continental flight to Curacao - then Divi Divi to Bonaire. We'd made our parking reservation with ADP. We arrived at the lot where we had the reservation, they told us they knew we had a reservation BUT - sorry all full. Just drive down the street 2 minutes...

We ended up parking in economy and just made the plane.

So on my return I email APD etc and demanded a refund, which they promised to send IMMEDIATELY. I also reminded them of their guarantee to recover our parking cost (in economy) from the parking lot that stiffed us.

Guess what - I still do not have either the refund of their fee nor have they ever attempted to reply to any of my emails, let along assisted me to recover my parking costs.

I think they are a scam. Indeed you can book a parking reservation using their service - but guess what, you can do that by contacting the parking lot directly. AND, their guarantee appears to be totally worthless.

Hi James,

You had to pre-pay in order to make a reservation? Or the refund was for parking in the other lot?

Thanks. Carlea

Sorry, Sorry , Sorry and thanks to Carlea and Goeff for asking that question. It made me check my facts.

My mistake. I DID NOT USE airportdiscountparking.com.

I got fleeced by airportparkingreservations.com. This is the outfit which offers guaranteed spaces and charges you a fee.

Thanks for the clarification James. And thanks to Ron and Anne for the link and recommendation. Valet parking at the airport sounds like a great way to start a vacation.

I used long term parking last time I left from Newark. Its the lot in the back in between the turnpike and the airport. They have a bus that brings you to the terminal you need. When i used it I payed $8.00 a day..

I think LT parking in Newark is up to $15 per day? I could swear I saw that somewhere... We either get someone to drive us or use Olympic Limo from Farmingdale NJ - Its $80 r/t per person. (the getting someone to drive is the better way for us!!! the same someone watches the dog too!!!)

I am on that flight as well on July 7th from Newark. Anyone else? It sounds like it is the way to go for sure. My only issue is that I am flying in from Detroit and my connection via NWA goes into LGA so I have to get everything from LGA to Newark. I land in LGA at 3:00pm though, so have plenty of time to make it for the 11:55pm newark flight. Any recomendations on how to get from LGA to Newark with my luggauge and dive gear?

good point!!! or maybe b/c i am on vacation and used Northwest points to get free tickets, I may do a limo? I heard they are pretty reasonable in NY b/c there so many of them?

My recommendation would be to take a cab from LGA to NY Penn Station and take the NJ Transit train to Newark Airport. The cab should cost $20/25, depending on traffic & the train is $14/person. You could try to save a few $$ and take the bus/shuttle from LGA to Penn Station. (the biggest headache is getting from NY to NJ, the train eliminates this)

The cheapo limo services in NYC are 212-666-6666 or 212-777-7777. I had them pick someone up at Penn Station & take them to LGA & they were there as promised. Book early, as that's a holiday weekend & cars will be hard to come by.

good point! thanks for the messages! I land at 3:30 and have a long time before needing to get to EWR. I used to live in Port Imperial by the ferries and worked at 42nd and lex, so I do know new work, but it is funny going back as a visitor and no car and no knowledge of the best way to get from one place to the next! How much would a cab be do you think from LGA to EWR? Good idea about the trian. I never realized penn station had a line to the airport. I moved in 2002 so maybe this is new? I never took the train, just the ferries. Is it the trenton line or the new brunswick line? I guess i could go to nj transit web site and check it out! Any other hints or helpful items would be cool!

the Newark Airport stop is a new stop. I think it opened 1-2 years ago. It's on the main Northeast Corridor line (& North Jersey Cost line according to NJT website). Amtrak also stops there, but it cost alot more than NJT.

Here's the direct link:

http://www.njtransit.com/rg/rg_servlet.sr?hdnPageAction=AirportConnectionsTo

Here's some other info on LGA transportation:

http://www.ny.com/transportation/airports/LGA.html

If you don't want to hassle with luggage on the train, there is a bus that originates in the Grand Central area & stops outside Port Authority on 42nd street that is very convenient. It picks of on 41st between Park & Lex. You buy tickets (around $15) at the newstand just next to the Subway sandwich shop. It runs every 15 minutes during the week.

I work at 42nd/Lex, so I have used this bus to come back to the office instead of hassling with a cab.

Hope this helps - send me an email if you need more specific info.

Wow sue...small world..i used to work at 42nd and lex at the chanin building. When I was there, there was an au bu paine (sp) on the first floor. Anyways, good point. It is much different thinking about traving in NY as a visitor. I am not worried about the money of the trip, just whichever is easiest. Even though i land at LGA at 3:30 and the ewr trip doesn't leave until 11:55, I just want to make sure I make it in enough time to relax and not worry about missing the only trip to BON that continental has per week! I don't know what i would do if something happened! (i would probably just walk up and buy whatever ticket cash to make it down there) :-). Anyways, thanks very much for your help!!!

Kevin - you should have time to grab a bite to eat in NYC (I don't recommend EWR food, although it's much better that it was 10+ years ago). Since you know the Grand Central area, you might be able to leave your bags with the Grand Hyatt luggage folks & grab a bite to eat at the Oyster Bar or one of the other good restaurants on the lower level of Grand Central (Junior's Cheesecakes is good, so is the Mexican place).

Have a good time - I'm off to Napa for a business trip on Sunday, so life isn't all bad outside of Bonaire.

PS - that was the dirtiest House of Pain (co-worker's nickname) in NYC. It was gutted last year and reopened as "Pret Manger" - overpriced premade sandwiches.

Thanks Sue, good point about Grand central, i used to eat there everyday as our building had a walkway underground if you walked like you were getting to the subway (i am sure you know the way). Yes, the Chenin building was old when I worked there. the little Pizzaria is the best. I think your plan it the best. Take a cab down there, maybe even to Grand central, have someone watch my bags, and then take the subway over the penn station to grab the NJ transit train over to the airport. I will have all my dive gear with me, but other than that, it seems like for clothes i shouldn't need too much!

Anything will be better than the time I thought it would be fun to dive off the coast of NJ. I am sure some people love this, but it was really not for me!

I AM A PERSON WHO ONCE STARTS THE VACATION LIKES TO REMAIN ON VACATION... A CAB WOULD BE SO MUCH SMOOTHER AND A LOT LESS WORK.... I'M THINKING 35 BUCKS TO GET THERE.

I think Kevin is hoping to kill some of his layover NOT in an airport. Even factoring in bad NYC traffic, a direct car/cab would get him to EWR around 6pm and leave lots of time to kill, until the 11:55pm departure The current weather forecast for Saturday is 85 & clear; why not spend some time walking around mid-town?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By kevin thornal (BonaireTalker - Post #22) on Monday, July 2, 2007 - 4:31 pm:     Edit PostPrint Post

Thanks both of you..yes..need to kill some time and EWR is not the most glamorous airport in the country, however, I do have a membership to the continental club, so a LITTLE nicer. However, most of those shut down early on the weekends so i will have to check. Does anyone know if continental's lounge is open late on Saturday? Anyways, I will kill some time in Mid-town and enjoy the 85 and sunny!

Kevin - there are 2 Continental lounges in Terminal C - the bigger one is near the gates with higher numbers. It has panoramic views of the runways & lower Manhattan. It's OK, not great - I was there a few weeks ago from 4-6pm on Thursday - a bit too crowded for my liking. Snacks were cheese, crackers, apples - nothing special. (website says it's open to 11:15pm).

I would take advantage of the weather & check out the old neighborhood. Was the lower level Grand Central food court open when you were here? If not, it's a great place to eat. Times Square keeps getting more glitzy with new stores & restaurants. Quite a change from what it looked like when I started working in NYC in 1989.

yes sue they did have the underground eating area when i lived there. I actually like the Indian place down there if it is still in business. Good to know the lounges stay open until we leave for Bonaire, as at least it is better than staying out in the "common" areas at 10pm :-). I guess the good news is that at that time of night on a saturday, I am sure the security lines are very short? How far in advance would you say I get to the airport for check in for this flight. I fly 100k miles per year, on NorthWORST airlines, but it is my only option out of Kalamazoo Michigan. I mainly fly through Detroit and do n ot do much business on the east coast, so haven't been to EWR in 9 years or so, but I am guessing the security isn't too long of a line that late on a weekend.

I will stay away from Times Square, I always hated that area when I decided sometimes to walk from my office at 42nd and lex to penn station to take NJ transit home. I think my plan will be to take the taxi from LGA to Grand Central, and then take the NJ transit to the airport.

Last question on this flight...I used miles and decided to treat myself to first class so I can hopefully sleep a little on the flight. Is it usually pretty quite for everyone to sleep or is it a "party" for people getting ready for vacation? Just curious!!!

Hello, I just want to point out that NJ transit does not leave from Grand Central. You will need to go to Penn Station to get to NJ transit.

YEs sir..thanks Scott...forgot to add taking the subway over from Grand Central to Penn Station first! great point...long day, but much better than hanging out in the EWR airport, especially if it is still going to be in the 85's and sunny!
