Is AJ strict on the size and wt of carry on luggage? Does anyone know the size requirement? Just wondering how I'm going to get all my camera equipment there.

Hey, I was just checking their link. Checked baggage if economy class is 2 checked bags up to 50lbs. each. 62" maximum dimensions.

Carry-on , 1 @ up to 30lbs. 45" dimensions.

if you visit their web page www.airjamaica.com and go to the upper left corner and hit baggage they break everything down for you.

Now my question is: We have a "bunch" of pelican bags that we don't use anymore. Steve brings all the camera equipment on in carry on luggage. He has divided them up between our two carry ons,
Since he had to re organize the bags at the counter last go around!
Does anyone else take their camera equipment with them? I just think that this is really gonna hold up the security checkers with having to unwrap all the bubble wrap! Any suggestions?

Thanks Meryl.

John bought a new backpack for the camera gear suggested by Mike & Mike which is great and used it once but now I don't know if we can bring it. I'll check out the site and go from there.

I use a large camera bag. They count it as a personal bag. It is small enought that it fits under the seat. I also have brought a lead bag for film. When I go thru security, I let them know that the lead bag is in the camera bag. They just bring it to the side and check it out.

Meryl, this past time (in July/Aug) I took my new camera and housing and got a camera bag to use as a carry-on. It's a gator brand bag and I think it was $19.99. It was VERY large and roomy, so I put the camera in the middle of it, and my extra clothing, bathing suit, and soft items around it. The only problem I had was at my original departure location in Columbus, they had to scan and re-scan it because they couldn't figure out what it was. It fit nicely under the seat, also.

I used AA, and had that bag, my purse, and a backpack and no one questioned it.

Thanks guys. Steve's carry on camera's weigh about 38 lbs. video camera and housing. 2 Canon camera's (one just in case) plus housing, lenses, strobes, fittings, etc. etc. He use to store all equipment in one big pelican and one small pelican and checked both as part of our 4 piece check in allowance. Our carry on's use to be all scuba stuff (and bagels and other goodies :-( )
He says if they make him check the carry on's he's going home....
Soooo if that happens I will have to find a dive buddy willing to share room 22 at the Belmar...

Concerning the 50 lb. weight limit... Does this mean that if your bag is over 50 lbs., you will be charged extra, or that you wll have to dump some stuff and leave it at the airport? It doesn't say on their web site, so has anyone ever run into this?

Yes AJ is strict about the 50 lbs weight limit. You will have to pay more if your bag is over 50 lbs. We weighed our bags at home before we left. My scale read 47 days and AJ's read 52 on the same bag!

Thanks, Karen.

I don't necessarily mind paying for the extra weight, but do you remember how much they charged you? As long as I don't have to try to mail stuff to Bonaire I will be happy. I'll be flying to Philly with two big, nearly empty suitcases and I plan on bringing back lots of goodies to Bonaire. How do you weigh your suitcase at home, just get on the scale with it? I remember reading a while ago that someone said they weigh their bags with a fish scale... is this very accurate?

Jenny, we were charged 25 dollars a bag. But looking at their new rates it looks like 50 dollars now.

Thanks, Meryl.

$50 a bag isn't so bad I guess. There's so much that I can't get here that I want to bring back.
