Summer Box/Bag Embargo Information


Due to heavy summer traffic, American Airlines and American Eagle will adopt embargoes on checked baggage and boxes from June 10, 2006 through August 13, 2006.
For the embargoed destinations identified below, boxes* and excess, overweight, or oversized pieces will not be accepted for transportation.

Passengers will be allowed to check a maximum of two pieces and they must be within the size and weight limits as follows (linear measurements calculated by adding the length, width and height of an item):

1st piece - up to 62 linear inches and 50 lbs.
2nd piece - up to 62 linear inches and 50 lbs.
Carry-on items may only be up to 45 linear inches and 40 lbs.
Note that in addition to the following locations listed, there is a year-round box embargo for flights from/through New York JFK to all Caribbean and Latin America destinations. A year-round bag and box embargo is also in effect for flights to La Paz and Santa Cruz, Bolivia.

American Eagle Embargoed Destinations
All American Eagle flights to and from San Juan are embargoed, as are American Eagle flights to Mexico (Aguascalientes, Chihuahua, Guadalajara, Leon and San Luis Potosí).

Any standing, more restrictive baggage allowance for American Eagle Flights to other destinations not listed above still apply and are not replaced by the guidelines shown above.

Additional Information
Sports equipment, such as golf bags, bikes and surfboards, can be accepted as part of the total checked bag allowance, although additional charges may apply. For more information, see our Baggage Allowance page.

Walkers, wheelchairs and any other assistive devices are welcomed for customers with disabilities.

*A "box" will be defined as a six-sided container of any size, constructed of cardboard, wood, plastic or metal, which is either square, rectangular or cylindrically shaped and is not normally used for the transportation of items associated with air travel. Plastic tubs/containers and/or coolers are considered to be boxes.

You can still go up to 70 pounds on the two pieces of luggage you bring down and pay the $25/bag overage fee. (I had called American when I first heard of this earlier this month, as I was flying back home to Bonaire with heavy bags, so this is also first hand experience.)

Bags over 70 pounds will be refused, though.

Gee, I need to look up just how big "62 linear inches" is! Thanks Jan for the update:-)

Height, width, and depth, added together Cynde. So a bag 30" long and 8 inches wide, would have to be 24 high.
