Our journey to Bon includes a 7 hour layover in San Juan giving us most of the day to, hopefully, visit a beach. Is anyone familiar with the area and has any suggestions?

Susan, there is an ENTIRE thread devoted to what to do in San Juan on a layover.... do a search and see what you can find!

a 7 hr lay over in san juan I would rent a car... drive to old san juan villiage and have a bite to eat and walk the cobblestone streets and bvisit the fort there and the old convento hotel in the court yard for lunch maybe
next drive to condado check out the old san juan hotel and the beach there for an hour..or more... give yourself at least 3-4 hrs to do this and at least 3 hrs to get back to airport which is close by and settle in for your flight !

Norman, I'm curious, did you do this on your last trip? Rent a car on your 7 hour lay over?

Hello Grasshopper
I lived on St Croix for 10 years. We always Island hopped to San juan for weekends. I know the area. With a full seven hour layover in the San Juan area, this will allow time to visit Old San Juan, which is a 15 minute drive from Condado. All close to the airport

You could take a cab to Condado: have them drop you off, spend a few hours there. Then take a Taxi to Old San Juan and spend 2 hours enjoying the sights.. Then back to the airport.
This might be the best way.

Norm, I spent six weeks in PR a couple years ago. Rented an apartment in Isla Verde:-) I was just curious about the car rental...as it would take time to rent, etc....plus, well, they drive CRAZY there! On our 7 hour lay overs we usually head to Isla Verde, get something to eat, hang out, get a massage, etc. Old San Juan is really neat if you haven't been there. The traffic though on weekends is tough, and it's hard to find a parking spot. We usually just take a cab, or have a friend who lives there pick us up and we spend the day with him:-)

A few of us made this thread on San Juan Airport Travel Tips to help folks out. If you have ideas to add, please PM me as I can stick it into the thread (as a moderator;-)

Cynde:-)

Norm, glad you enjoyed Bonaire. When did you live on St. Croix? Been there once, in 1985. My ex brother in law and his wife used to spend 6 months there annualy (to escape the up state New York winters):-) Loved the snorkeling there, wasn't a diver at that time though:-(

Hi Grasshopper. I lived on St Croix from 1983-1991. I worked for the Radio station there Isle 95, WJKC, which is still going. Also worked for another classic rock station there at that time Q99. I am sure if he was there are paths crossed.
UpState N Y / Gee. I played hockey in Rochester, Buffalo, Ithaca, Binghamton etc. Did my final two years at Brockport State out side Rochester in mid 70's. (Now I gave away my age )!

yes, Bonaire was nice. I did not have a dive buddy the time there. I would of liked to get out: more south and also do Karparta. We did Rappel and a few others just off Rappel and mostly Klein. I enjoyed. The night dive off Capt don's and the Town pier was terrific !
