That is the million dollar question Ann!! Every airline ticket counter has those metal frames where passengers can insert their bag to see if it fits -- but have you ever looked at what some folks carry on to planes??!! And what about the "one carry on and one personal item" rule? Sorry for the rant ... I think that each airline website has the rules for that airline. You can find what they consider to be acceptable dimensions there.

I have to say it... have you seen "Meet the Parents"??? I laugh every time the poor guy tries to stuff that bag through the security scanner... lol....

Along those lines, though, I DO have a question I'd like to add to the pile here. If I use my backpack as my carryon (which I always do) -- can I also bring my camera case with my camera ??? I just got the new camera and housing and want to keep it on my lap the whole time. lol. I also plan to carry a purse. Any info???

Kelly, I bring a carry-on on wheels & a large camera bag ( and piggy back a CD player on it). I've never been questioned. The camera bag is considered my personal bag. I bring a small purse and pack it in my carry on. I put my wallet & a few personal items in the camera bag. My pet peeve is when mostly everyone puts all their bags in the overheads. If we carry 2 bags each... one always goes under the seat.

Kelly ... backpacks and purses are considered "personal items" and then you get one other carry-on. But that is just the announcement -- you know people get on with more! You should be fine with the backpack and camera bag. I NEVER take my purse to Bonaire -- just toss the wallet and passport into my backpack. By leaving a purse and all my make-up at home I really am on vacation!! Course since Cynde is bringing a prom dress in July I may need to rethink the make-up ....

sometimes (with the carry ons) you have to get a little sneaky - place say the camera bag inside the outerflap of the knapsack - that gets you by anyone counting bags - you can then take the bag out to make things fit once on the airplane...

i don't like risking p'ing off other passengers with all that luggage but with a camera(s) and a housing(s) and a laptop and all this talk of stuff turning up missing in san juan it is what you gotta do - and then still wonder if your dive gear will make it...

maybe there will be a lot of snorklers on the flight;)

I pack my most important stuff (BC, Reg,Mask, HID, & skin suit) in my carry on and then carry a back pack that I will put my camera & purse and a few other things in. (Don't have to worry about the 50lb rule with that stuff in carry on also) Clothes get the check in bag so if they don't make it... oh well at least I have my dive gear. I believe the dimensions of most carry on bags is supposed to be no bigger than 22 inches.

Instead of a purse I carry/wear a fanny pack for the essentials like wallet and lip gloss. Like Susan I pack my reg, prescription mask, and swim suit and one change of clothes in my carry on. The mask for me is probably the most important because it has my glasses prescription in it, I can't see gauges without it, my arms are to short. Andy

The baggage is getting smaller! Steve now carries his camera equipment. BC's and Regs are packed since the "camera equipment" now has top billing!
My carry on has toiletries and change of clothes, meds and our masks.
You should have seen Steve at the airport on our last trip! They told him his carry on was too heavy and he had to remove something! (It was all camera stuff...)He took out his strobe and put it in the checked luggage! He was behind the counter...clothes were everywhere...would have made a great video!!! He was mumbling "new strobe!) all the way to Bonarie...it was fine!
Next trip I have to tighten up my packing...I use to bring alot of food but the grocery stores seem pretty well stocked. (The mounds bars are still coming!)

Well, now my prom dress secret is out...dagnamit...should I still pack my pearls? LOL! Susan, re-think the make-up for the pictures...heh heh:-) I am a tad worried about the dress. Maybe I should try to fit it in my carry-on as well or stuff it in the back pack. That taffeta does take up a lot of room though...sigh...

Cynde, I can forget the make-up -- we know what Tom can do with PhotoShop ...
