If I take American from Newark to San Juan and American Eagle from San Juan to Bonaire, can I check my bags all the way through from EWR?

Thanks

C

Carl, yes your bags will be checked all the way through to Bonaire if you take American from Newark and American Eagle to Bonaire. American considers it as their airline all the way. In addition, when you check in in Newark, you will get your boarding passes for both flights. The same is true when you leave Bonaire. The ease of being on one airline only is one of the reasons that I am willing to put up with a long San Juan layover when we fly to Bonaire.

Last March I flew from Minneapolis to San Juan nonstop on Northwest Airlines, then San Juan to Bonaire on American Eagle. My bags were checked all the way through both down and back.

Apparently Northwest and American have some agreement that allows bags to be transferred from one airline to the other without intervention by the passenger. It worked GREAT.

As for the layover, we took a taxi to the beach, had an excellent brunch one of the hotels, hung out on the beach for awhile reading, and went back for our flight. The hotel strip in San Juan is right next to the airport' 5 min. or less cab ride. Next time we'll check out old San Juan.

One thing to watch if your changing airlines - NWA and AA have had different weight restrictions on luggage (especially important if your packing a lot of dive gear, batteries, etc)
