So I called AJ today because I finally had time to myself and they told me they can't transfer the name to another person and they can't give me any kind of refund other than the taxes I paid which is only like 90 dollars of the 580 or so I paid. So not only am I out all that money not sure what I'm going to do for my mom's ticket...

Hi Shawn,

Not sure what happened to your Mom's ticket but no airline will transfer a ticket's name as far as I know. They are mostly non refundable and looking at what you paid and hearing the policy you have exactly that, a non refundable ticket.

If anyone has an older person traveling or suspects the trip could be cancelled, buy a least restrictive ticket.

Can your Mom travel another time and pay the penalty??

Ann

Ann,
The ticket is not in his mother's name. He wanted his mother to use a ticket issued in another name. Shawn and I discussed this on another thread, where I suggested he ask the airline if the name could be changed before he planned to bring his mother.
Shawn, sorry to hear this!!!

aye, after talking to a buddy I guess it's because of the whole 9/11 thing that this changed. I don't get why, but whatever. I thought they could at least refund the money to my account so I could travel later, but apparently not. I wasn't exactly expecting this to happen, but I guess that's my own fault. I emailed her to ask her to pay me for the ticket now. We'll see how that goes, if she doesn't pay looks like I'll be going to civil/small claims court to try to recover my money. What's the chances of me winning that you think? lol

Shawn,
Sorry to hear this! You may be able to "win" in small claims court... but collecting may be another story.
I sure hope you catch a break soon!

Shawn, I remember you saying that you would buy the ticket for her because she was having a hard time coming up with the money.. Well I don't think that she asked you to buy the ticket. The law will see it the same way.. If by chance she agrees to pay you back SAVE THE EMAIL!! Ron

Shawn;

My similar experience with AA allowed me/her to take a vocher for the ticket amount minus a $50 fee. The vocher could then be transfered to someone else - me in this case.

i was checking another airline site today and noticed that they will allow you to transfer a ticket to a different person for a $35 fee. i guess each airline has their own policies...you should try to negotiate a compromise with AJ...it can't hurt to try....

She called and asked to speak with a manager. They said they would call her back tomorrow. I'm hoping she has more luck being a girl, they seem to get off of things easier then us men. I told her to do the crying bid if they say no lol.

Yea i tried to get them to give me just a credit for a future flight but they said no to that as well. If nothing else this will be a valuable lesson learned in life.

She has told me many time she would pay me for the ticket and told me to go ahead and purchase it for her. She even said after we broke up she would pay for it, however I don't have it in writing. I'm not sure how well a verbal agreement will stand up, I guess it all just depends on the judge. Let's cross our fingers and hope it doesn't come to that

If she has no luck, keep calling AJ and explaining what you want to do. One of the people you speak to might let you have a voucher.
One of my sons had a similar problem recently. The sixth person he spoke to agreed to what he needed.
Perseverance pays off!

Actually, I sent in my case to Judge Joe Brown and they said they'd take on the case if she agrees to go and all i have to do is file a civil suit, which is like 85 bucks. So hopefully i'll be getting my money lol

Shawn, I'm glad you're still going to Bonaire. It's a wonderful island, full of peace and it sounds like you need that right now. I haven't followed all this thread, but what's coming through clearly to me is the need to just "let go" -- your stewing about all this isn't going to help you in the long run, and putting it behind you will be the best thing you can do. Money is only money, but peace of mind and serenity are priceless.

I've spent a lot of my life in resentment, and have found it only hurts ME. The person I resent gets on with their life, but I'm left stirring the garbage. I have to just let it be, move on, and forgive -- both myself and the other person --- then I can have peace. That's what I wish for you.

Josie

This isn't about me letting go, I've already let go of her, however in life people need to pay when they do wrong. I didn't do anything wrong(other than spend more time with school than her apparently) and she needs to pay for her agreement. I could care less about the girl, I just don't think I should be out 540 dollars, especially when I'm a poor college student. It makes going on this trip really hard because now I really have to cut out a lot of things out of my budget, which drain on your piece of mind as you'd like to say lol. Eating PB&J instead of a ham and cheese sandwich can have its effects on you too lol.

On a positive note I've gone on 2 dates this last week with a new girl I met. She seems really nice so things are looking up in the love department I think lol, we'll see anyways.
