I'm travelling from the midwest and usually try to take the earliest flight to islands so that my first day there I can spend it as a vacation day as well. all the flights I find here don't seem to leave for bonaire till later in the evening. Is this pretty common place to get in at night? I was thinking of doing the leave the night before thing so that we could just sleep on the longer end of the ride, but it seems like flights only leave in late afternoon for the island.

Shawn, in addition to the new Continental flight, unless you travel AJ, or an island hopper from Curacao or Aruba, your only other choice is AA/AE to bon which does get you in later in the evening. Not all airlines fly daily to Bon either. It's much different travel getting to Bon than to other more popular Caribbean destinations ;-) More work, but worth the effort:-)

Shawn, welcome to BT !!! Glad to have a fellow midwesterner among us... :-)

I leave from Columbus, Oh, and there is always an early flight, sometimes as early as 5:45 am. I usually go through Chicago and then on to San Juan (on American Airlines). Maybe you could check a flight from Milwaukee to Chicago and go that route?

Thanks for the quick replies. Yea I was looking at american airlines right now. Every time I go to the continental page I can't seem to find their new bonaire route on there, just information about it. Do you happen to know what day that one is going to be flying? We're looking at a 7 day trip, but I found airfare for an 8 night trip for $720 with taxes and fees per person. We may bump that date later depending on my finals for school though. Basically we're trying to find the cheapest fare possible to get there, I hate spending a ton of money on airfare, but no real choice here. I guess the one good thing about making it so hard to get there is that the reefs probably won't be so destroyed like they are in all the other touristy caribbean destinations.

Oh one other thing... I was searching on travelocity and according to them continental is more expensive from milwaukee than american airlines, a difference of something like 30 bucks per ticket. They didn't have the dates I wanted either, I couldn't get a return flight for 2 weeks. They have their flights listed on their site, but I can't get the bonaire airport to show up on the continental airlines site.

$720 round trip is a great price, you should grab it if you can.

I have the money right now but the gf does not :-( she doesn't save very well. I thought about buying both our tickets, and letting her pay me back, but I'd prefer her to get the money first to make sure she actually saves her money instead of me getting stuck footing the whole bill.

i figured it to be 663.20 per person if i were to fly out of ohare instead of milwaukee which would save us an extra 60 bucks a person. I might have to look in to seeing if someone would give us a ride there instead. Her mom and dad go there all the time to visit their grandma and I might be able to talk them in to taking us to the airport, but they're not the most reliable people in the world so paying an extra 60 bucks doesn't sound all that bad, plus it'll cost 40 bucks just to drop us off and pick us up because of the charges waiting to drop us off and pick us up. Last time I flew in to ohare we were 3 hours late. I called from charlotte and said i was going to be a little late, wasn't expecting 3 hours though lol.

shawn, continental will start flying on december 16 and will fly to bonaire on fridays after that. as i understand it, the flight leaves houston about 1130PM and arrives in bonaire about 6AM and then leaves on saturday about 8AM (not at all sure about that but i think that's what someone told me) to return to houston.

Well continental is booked up for the week we wanted to go according to one site(another quoted 850), i can drive to chicago and fly AJ for 560 for the time period we wanted. I've heard so many bad stories on here though about booking AJ though and am not sure I want to go that route. You can't beat 560 though for the airfare.

Shawn, I hope your girlfriend doesn't read Bonaire Talk ! ha ha! She doesn't save well, she's clumsy, her parents aren't very reliable... maybe she'll go without you ! (I would!) :-)

Hope you get the airfare situation worked out to your advantage.

LOL kelly, i was thinking the same thing. that's why shawn doesn't let his girlfriend read bonairetalk and why i have mary convinced that nothing of importance is really said on this board...she thinks i pretty much just read other peoples posts and don't say anything myself (much less anything about her).

I had some friends book tickets last night to Bonaire from Columbus. They are going the overnight Continental route and I believe they are spending approx. $800 pp.

But this is their first Bonaire trip, I finally talked them into it, and they are very excited. They are going in Feb.

Bon Dia, AJ is the best deal but they only travel on Saturdays. Well Continental only has one flight a week as well. The difference is if AJ has a problem with the plane they will send parts and tecks from Montego Bay to make repairs. Continental will have to send that stuff from Texas 7 hrs away.

We have 10 trips under our belts with AJ and I will fly with them till they stop servicing Bonaire. Ya can't beat the earlly afternoon arrival and departure times..

AA/AE is a longer day and we have used them before for different destinations in the Caribbean. The 8:30 pm arrival is OK as long as it's not the first time to the Island. But we enjoy landing at around 2:30 pm and checking into Dive Inn and in the water by 4:30 pm... Love it!! Ron

Thanks to all who posted again. I think we're going to go the AJ route if we do go. Lol last night she happened to read over my shoulder and saw what I had wrote, so now I have some kissing up to do. lol and on a side note she wouldn't be able to go without me, I'll probably have to pay for everything now if we do go. She keeps giving me a round about answer on if she definately will go or not and I don't want to book everything if she's going to pull out on me. She doesn't get the concept of you need to book trips well in advance. It's driving me nuts cause I want to book up this fare now(we're going to go AJ after listening to everyone and reading other posts). She doesn't think she can save up the money to go...

shawn, i was going to suggest that part of this thread be shifted to the "bonaire talkers advice to the lovelorn" section but then i realized there isn't one. good luck with the girlfriend...as they say "women, can't live with em, can't kill em". hang in there.

Just kidding buddy!! Book that airfare !!

Ouch, and you guys say I'm mean ;)

I'm going to book the air tonight after I talked to her when she gets home from work. She needs to get new tires on her car first and foremost, and having a broke gf is better than a dead one lol. We already got snow today. I'll just let her pay me each time she gets a paycheck. And hey I'm not so mean, I'm buying all of her snorkeling gear for xmas lol.

Getting back on subject(so my topic doesn't get moved to the lovelorn section lol) we're going to book for the may 27,2005 departure and coming back on june 3rd through jamaica air out of ohare. I think that getting there then and getting to our place and dropping stuff off and just hitting the water right away is the way to go. AA/AE just gets in too late, and continental is way more money. Thanks for everyone's help on this.

Yea if she didn't figure it out by now I'd think she has problems. I had her trying on different gear, asking her about shoe sizes, etc.

And that was supposed to be 2006 departure, i'm an idiot

Pat, my share of GF's ticket is in the mail.

Shawn, GF has a name and is a real live human being - right?

lol I think if she did go with you guys that she'd be finding herself a new bf lol. Although going on a vacation alone doesn't sound all that bad to be honest. I don't mind going off on my own. I used to go for 6 hour hikes all the time in the woods by myself. Not the smartest thing in the world, but I enjoy just going off and doing my own thing a lot of times. The excitement of this trip for me though is hoping that she falls in love with the ocean as I did when I first jumped in the caymans. I'm thinking of doing a renee snorkeling trip when we first get there to let a pro get her used to the snorkeling idea before she goes off with me on my adventures.

Carrie, huh??? Well we need pictures !!!

Shawn, I've gone to Bonaire a few times alone, and loved every second of it. It was way better the last time though because I brought my husband for the first time and he loved it. Way more fun to share it.

Kelly, if my memory is correct, another BTer named Suzi used to travel to Bonaire alone

A picture has been granted. I added one to my profile of the 2 of us. It's not the best picture, but it's one of the few we have together. I'm the picture taker typically, it's one of my favorite things to do. My sister was taking pics of us one day and that's about the only semi serious one she got of me in it lol
