I'm planning to go to Bonaire in a couple of weeks. I have a tight connection at San Juan. I'll be arriving on Continental, and grab the AA flight to Bonaire.

Does anyone know if it is possible to check my baggage through to Bonaire, or will I have to claim it in San Juan and check it in with American?

Thanks for your help.

Colette -

My suggestion is to call Continental to ask if they will check the baggage through to Bonaire (get the name, title and contact number of the person who gives you the answer if at all possible). Next, call American to make certain they will accept the baggage checked through by Continental (get the name...).

Even if you get assurances that your bags will be checked through, do take any essential items in a carry-on. Do not be surprised in San Juan if American Eagle puts your carry-on in the nose of the airplane as you get on the plane. The overheads in the ATRs American Eagle flies on the SJU-BON route probably have smaller overheads than the Continental jet on which you will fly to SJU. But you will know for certain that your carry-on will arrive with you in Bonaire.

Have a fun trip!

P.S. Are you familiar with the San Juan airport? Since you're on a tight connection, it wouldn't hurt to check out your arrival and departing gates in advance. Here's a map of the SJU airport: http://www.aa.com/content/travelInformation/travelHelp/sjuairportdetails.jhtml.

Thanks for the suggestion. It gave me an idea.... Since my flight originates with Alaska Airlines, I contacted them. They told me that they would be able to check the luggage all the way through. Whew!

Now, if the Continental flight arrives on time, all will be well. If not, I'll have some time in San Juan. :-)
