Below is part of what I posted in May 2004 following a Wednesday departure. Observed similar enforcement in October 2004 for a Saturday departure. Don't know whether they have relaxed since then, but would not count on it.

One word of caution (at least for passengers flying out of Baltimore): AJ is STRICTLY enforcing its baggage limits of two checked bags per person with a maximum total weight of 70 pounds and ONLY ONE carry-on bag per person, not exceeding 40 pounds. Unlike some other airlines (i.e., United) that allow you one carry-on plus a personal item like a handbag or a computer bag, for our Wednesday-departing flight, AJ limited us to only the single carry-on. (Fortunately my computer bag is expandable, so we quickly juggled where we had things.) I don’t know if AJ is enforcing these limits for their other departing cities, but they did last week out of BWI. Fee for extra checked bags started at $100 or so. Also no single bag can exceed 70 pounds. No one at AJ was nasty about the weight or carry-on limits, they just fully enforced those limits (including weighing some people’s carry-ons).

Word to the wise: Plan accordingly.

one of our bags was 75lbs. and yes, they made us unpack our bag, while we were struggling to make the flight so that we could move things from one bag to another.

we had weighed it at home, but obviously not accurately enough!

Aimee,
It could have been worse - we had an overweight bag and one that was too close to make repacking worthwhile. It cost us $150 extra for something like 8 pounds overweight.

Their website indicates two free checked bags per person up to 70# EACH and the one carryon up to 40#.

You have to be a Philidelphia lawyer or something to sort out all this legalese sometimes. The way I read it the first time I thought it was just 70# TOTAL checked luggage rather than the 140# TOTAL allowance. Which is still a heck of a lot of stuff to be schlepping thru an airport without a team of jungle bearers.
