I just spoke with USAirways today and they confirmed that scuba bags are no longer included in the free baggage allowance. Domestically it is $50 a pop and an international trip could cost as much as $90, depending on destination. However, golf bags are still allowed as one piece of luggage in the free allowance. No unfairness here!
The answer is to do what I've always done - carry your gear in a standard pullman suitcase. When I asked about doing that, they said that was okay. In other words, I could have two suitcases loaded with scuba gear and clothes - no problem. If I checked in only one scuba bag with clothes and gear, and no other bags, I get hit for the $50. Fair warning to those of you using USAirways enroute to Bonaire or wherever else you dive. Does anyone know if other airlines are doing this?

I just checked United Airlines and they have a similiar restriction that scuba gear needs "special handling" like bicycles, surfboards, and kennels. I have always traveled with my gear in a plastic trunk, a scuba backpack, or suitcase and nobody has questioned it. It sounds like the concern might be scuba gear in those flimsy net bags.

Linda:

I just think some bean counter for USAirways just discovered a new source of revenue! I'm calling their consumer affairs office for followup because the rez staff really didn't sound too clear about what constituted scuba equipment. "You mean, like tanks and stuff?"
