Can anyone tell me if the airlines from the US are enforcing the 50 pound weight limit on luggage when going to Bonaire? On a recent trip out of the country I was charged $1/lb for every pound I was over the limit.

Air Jamaica was saying seventy pounds and sixty-two inches when I inquired yesterday.

American, As of two minutes ago:
"For flights to/from Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands
The maximum amount of baggage each ticketed passenger is allowed free of charge is:
2 pieces checked and one carry-on
Please note that one carry-on personal item (see "Carry-on Allowance") does not count toward the free bag allowance.

Two checked bags at 62 in/157 cm each
One carry-on bag at 45 in/114 cm
The maximum weight per checked bag is 70 lbs/32 kgs.
The maximum weight per carry-on bag is 40 lbs/18 kgs.
"

AJ was 70# for economy passengers when I went in April and so far still for my trip in August. :-)

I do know that a recent US domestic flight they had it for 50# coach, 70# for first class. Don't remember the carrier, but may have been Delta or United.

if you take a US carrier to Aruba then jump to Bonaire on BE, BE has a 44 lb limit....real pain in the xxxx if your have set your weight according to US standards... BE costs for overweight are outrageous

Back in March (before our trip) I e-mailed BE and asked about the weight restriction (our return flight was on BE to Curacao). The response I received was that it was 20 Kgm (44 Lbs) per checked bag...one checked bag per person and an additional 10 Kgm (22 Lbs) if you were a diver. Our checked bags were over 20 Kgm but under 30 Kgm and no one said anything about being over the weight limit.

Gregg, you mean that checked baggage can only weigh 44 lbs each?? Okay that scares me since I'm doing that next month, going through Aruba and getting on BE...

Kelly,

BE's limit is 44 lb total plus an extra 10 kg (22 lb) if you request it when you get your ticket AND if the ticket agent makes a notation on the ticket...make sure you remind the agent to note it on the ticket. I've been forced to pay twice for overweight even though I was authorized the extra 10 kg becasue the agent didn't note it on the ticket. the Gate agent said I could go back and argue with the ticket agent to avoid the fee but I would have missed the flight...go figure

Gregg, my ticket has already been purchased... should I just go to the ticket counter in Aruba and tell them?

Kelly ... my July ticket has also been purchased so I am planning on sending an email (similar to Mike's above) and then will print it out and take it along if it OKs the extra weight. My experience with BE is that things are somewhat dependent on the agents you are talking with so if you can have something in hand it might help. And since you are going before me you can pave the way!
