Steven, tried to read the article on Air Aruba and the carriers who might take over their routes, but your site would not let me access the article while entering as a "Guest" of the site. Is this normal? How can I access this without registering? Thanks! Carole

I reached Steven's url yesterday, could not just
a minute ago and then it worked, even w/o the
guest thing. Suspect this last is my cache but
it refreshed.???? Here is the article content.
Note that there is no mention of inter-island
flights by any of these airlines. I am sure they
will connect to Curacao but Bonaire??? And
then there may be the catamaran.!??!

Carriers poised to replace Air Aruba
(10/26/00)

By Andrew Compart

ORANJESTAD, Aruba -- Air Aruba suspended
its operations indefinitely, but several U.S.
airlines already had plans to launch or expand
service to the popular tourist destination as
the country's government again tried to assure
travelers they'll have plenty of options.

United launches seasonal weekend service
Nov. 11 out of Chicago. US Airways launches
its new service Nov. 12 out of Philadelphia.

Aruba already is served with twice-daily flights
on American from Miami, as well as service
from New York and San Juan. Delta flies
nonstop from Atlanta and will begin service
from New York's Kennedy this December.

TWA and Continental also provide service.

"Currently, we are working with other airlines
and they have assured us they will work with
Air Aruba passengers so there will be no gap
in service whatsoever," the Aruba government
said.

Air Aruba, meanwhile, insisted it has
suspended service, not shut down. At the
moment, however, it does not have any aircraft
it can fly to the U.S.

Three of its leased aircraft were repossessed.
One MD-88 still in the airline's possession is
in heavy maintenance, which takes about a
month to complete; its other MD-88 has an
engine that needs to be revamped, and its
DC-9 exceeds U.S. noise standards.

The government owns 30% of Air Aruba.

Hi Carol,
I just entered the site by clicking on the link and clicking on guest. Sorry not my site so I don't know if they are having problems or not.

Article mentions that Air Aruba insist that they have not shut down but have suspended service. It also mentions that it has no planes to fly to the U.S.
The article also states that three of its leased aircraft were repossessed. One MD-88 still in the airline's possession is in heavy maintenance, which takes about a month to complete; its other MD-88 has an engine that needs to be revamped, and its DC-9 exceeds U.S. noise standards. American, TWA, Continental, Delta provide service to Aruba from the U.S. United is due to start service from Chicago on November 11 and U.S. Air from Philadelphia on November 12.

The problem is not getting from the U.S to Aruba or Curacao but getting to Bonaire. Looks to me like the AUA and CUR markets are oversaturated. It will be hard for ALM and Air Aruba to continue to compete with the U.S. carriers. I hope that the government redirects its priority to provide reliable inter-island service.
